Communication in My Opinion
When I first decided to major in Communication Studies I chose the major solely based on the fact that it was the fastest degree I could earn. I never knew that choosing this course of study could prove to be one of the best decisions I feel I have made in my academic career. I am a twenty-nine year old Navy veteran who has watched quite a few friends make it in the “real world” for several years now. I am ready for my chance. Learning how to communicate better and understanding multiple forms of communication will help me achieve my goal of earning a degree and communicating effectively.

What is communication? One the very first and most basic definitions I learned while enrolled in Communication Studies 201 is that communication is the sending and receiving of messages or information. In several major courses since then, it has been broken down even further. My opinion isn’t that much different. A sender sends a message that a receiver receives and interprets seems to sum up the most basic definition of communication. What I didn’t know and am currently in the process of continuing to learn is that there is so much more the communication than just the sending and receiving of messages

After graduating high school in 2002, I knew that college and I weren’t meant for each just yet, so I decided to enlist in the Navy. I needed to grow and mature as a person before I attempted college and potentially wasted thousands of dollars because I would have taken it for granted. After a four year enlistment that included five deployments supporting the Global War on Terrorism, as well as Hurricanes Katrina and Rita rescue efforts I found myself starting college at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
