Communicating at Work
People come from every part of the world, with different backgrounds and cultures; bringing with them their view on how they think things should be done. Therefore, when all these beliefs coincide, it is important for everyone to work at keeping the lines of communication open, especially in a work environment. Communicating at work can be accomplished in different ways. In order for the workplace to be a thriving environment; the following issues should be addressed: common barriers we are faced with, effective listening skills, tactics you can use, and how to handle conflict at work. Workers play key roles in the success or failure of a work environment and in order to succeed, you must be able to effectively communicate in all aspects. (Crescenzo, 2010)
Common barriers that everyone faces in the workplace mainly have to do with the different ways people communicate and those individuals that make it very difficult to maintain the friendly comfortable environment. To communicate doesn’t mean to just talk. True communication requires more than just words. Management in some places only give lip service, to open communication, but doesn’t really follow through on the words they say. Other places of employment post notices on bulletin boards and send out memos and emails that they deem is adequate communication. Communication isn’t over when you finish delivering your message and lack of follow through doesn’t help employees feel comfortable talking within the company. Ineffective communication often results in poor cooperation and coordination, lower productivity, undercurrents of tension, gossip and rumors, and increased turnover and absenteeism. Experience shows there are many ways managers can improve internal communication and it is important to understand that communication is a two-way street.
