COURSE SYNOPSIS

This course is designed to increase students’ awareness level of the functions and importance of effective communication in the business arena. This course focuses on the application of communication principles in achieving organizational goals. Special emphasis is placed on developing writing and speaking proficiency.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1. To enhance students’ understanding of the communication process, communication barriers, types of messages and communication across cultures.

2. To inspire students to improve their communication skills (written and oral) as a key ingredient in career success.

3. This course, throughout the semester, will emphasize on students’ oral communication skills (especially in oral presentation) and expose students to the use of multimedia.

4.To expose students to teamwork via team project paper.

5.To help students manage a myriad of current issues in business communication.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the course, students will be able to:-

1. relate to communication theories and principles in an organization. 2. apply communication methods both orally and non-verbally in a business scenario. 3. demonstrate values, attitudes and ethical behaviors in the internal and external environment communication of an organization. 4. exhibit the characteristics of communication, teamwork and management through the application of effective business communication techniques.

DESCRIPTION OF ASSESSMENT:

Mid-term Examination (10%): A 1 1/2-hours exam paper consisting of 100 multiple choices. It covers from Chapters 1, 2, 3, 12, and 13. Mid Term Test will be held on 1st November 2012 (Thursday).

Group Assignment (20%): The themes of the assignment are informative, demonstrative and persuasive communications skills. Further information will be discussed during the first lecture. Deadline for Group Assignment is 24th December 2012 (Friday) before 4 p.m.

Public Speaking (15%): Each student is required to deliver a 5-minute presentation. Students will be assessed on their presentation skills.

Peer Assessment (5%): Each student is required to assess his/her friend presentation and provide quality feedback that shows his/her understanding of the subject ATW112E.

Final Exam (50%): A 2-hours exam paper consisting of multiple choicesquestions and essay questions.
