COMMUNICATING THE VISION AND ACHIEVING FELLOWSHIP; THE CHALLENGE OF A START-UP BUSINESS ABSTRACT
This paper explores the effect of effective communication or lack of it by a leader in an organization, especially when it is a start-up business. It looks the process a leader goes through in achieving fellowship and the challenges that faces a leader in communicating his/her vision. The paper reviews various literature and related experience with regards to start-up business, communication, leadership and followers. It concludes with a summary of the role of communication in the success of organization.
Overview Communication is an important tool for effective leadership. The effectiveness of every leader depends on how well he/she is able to communicate. In today’s increasing competition and many things craving for attention, the ability of a business leader to communicate is crucial to success. From effectively communicating with staff to reaching out to clients and customers, communication is a huge factor in business operations. Every organization, big or small needs to communicate clearly to be heard. Even more crucial is communication to a start-up business. It is my personal opinion that, the success of an organisation is effective communication from the leadership. In this document, I shall explore what makes effective communication and how effective communication from leadership foster organizational success. Peter de la Billiere wrote (Principles of Leadership) “no leader is effective unless he or she is skilful at communication” (p. 316) How does an idea become a business? How does one buy into an idea? How do you attract the right pool of personnel amidst a tight budget for payroll? How do you establish a track record? How does a client begin to give you business and a supplier agrees to provide credit for goods and services. Will your bankers be there for you when you need them? These and

many more are fundamental for the success of a business. The role of a leader in this will be to effectively pool all these through with the right communication. Pulling through these clutters must come with a level of efficiency through the appropriate communication modes, the right structures in place and continuous evaluation.
What is leadership? In recent times, leadership has become a well-known subject of which many are interested. Over 311,000,000 meanings of what leadership is can be found on Google. That proves that there is a genuine quest for leadership in the modern organisation. In an article by Alexander W. Astin (2007), he defines leadership as “a process that is ultimately concerned with fostering change.” Dubrin (2010) defines leadership as “the ability to inspire confidence and support among the people who are needed to achieve organizational goals.” “Leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to contribute to making something extraordinary happening” (Alan Keith, Genentech ). From the above definition and the many others online, leadership clearly has to do with achieving, change and people. A leader has the passion to make things happen. A leader creates change and works with people – constituents. Leadership is a relationship between leaders and constituents.
