This paper explores the effect of effective communication or lack of it by a leader in an organization, especially when it is a start-up business. It looks the process a leader goes through in achieving fellowship and the challenges that faces a leader in communicating his/her vision. The paper reviews various literature and related experience with regards to start-up business, communication, leadership and followers. Overview Communication is an important tool for effective leadership. The effectiveness of every leader depends on how well he/she is able to communicate. In today’s increasing competition and many things craving for attention, the ability of a business leader to communicate is crucial to success. Astin (2007), he defines leadership as “a process that is ultimately concerned with fostering change.” Dubrin (2010) defines leadership as “the ability to inspire confidence and support among the people who are needed to achieve organizational goals.” “Leadership is ultimately about creating a way for people to contribute to making something extraordinary happening” (Alan Keith, Genentech ). From the above definition and the many others online, leadership clearly has to do with achieving, change and people. A leader has the passion to make things happen. A leader creates change and works with people – constituents. Leadership is a relationship between leaders and constituents. It, like all relationships, is a somewhat fragile condition and needs to be carefully, constantly cultivated. The ability of a...
