Aristotle articulated a definition of humor in which people laugh at weird or deranged people. Another example can be with Native Americans. For their interpretation of humor, they made people act like young and foolish kids with erratic behaviors. Archeological digs from Holland also expose that humor was used to relieve emotional tension. At this point Rappaport is trying to persuade us that humor has had a long history, and the definition fluctuates with time and people.…

Over the past couple of decades the usage of offensive stereotypes have played a big role in popular films, TV shows, music videos, and comedy routines today. In fact one can only argue that these offensive stereotypes have increased considerably and will only continue to grow. There are many reasons as to why these stereotypes have only increased and have led to the creators of these films making millions and millions of dollars. The main reason behind this is making fun of race, color, poverty, and other cultures and using straightforward offensive words to do so is humorous to a large part of the US population. Although most of us would feel insulted if these offensive racial stereotypes were directed toward us. The purpose of comedy routines/films was to bring laughter for the media today, which was not the case decades ago.…

“Some men see things as they are and ask why. Others dream things that never were and why not”, said by George Bernard Shaw (miscellaneous quotes). In society today, many people go about with things and don’t ask why they do such matter. In the article, “Corn-pone opinions” by Mark Twain, he uses a good example: he states that “fashion has established itself: it is admired, now, and no one laughs”. In other words, fashion is created, and people go along with it and never ask why they do so. Alain de Botton argues that humorists are not to entertain but “to convey with impunity messages that might be dangerous or impossible to state directly”. In agreement, humorists play a vital role in society.…

Humor has been used for many generations with an unclear origin. Over time as society progresses, the kind of humor produced adjusts to what fits the culture. One thing doesn’t change however, and that is the purpose of humor which is to provide laughter and amusement for whoever is aware of the topic. In this day and age, we live in a time of humor that is much different than the humor that took place a hundred, or even fifty years ago. Back in 2004, Alain de Botton argued in his nonfiction book Status Anxiety, how humor can be used to not only entertain but it also allows messages regarding society to be safely expressed without the danger that could occur if stated directly. For this reason, Botton believes they play a key role in society.…

For example, here have been numerous jokes about the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. I personally do not think it’s okay to talk about a deadly attack like that. There were thousands of people who died in it. People were jumping off buildings and burning to death. That specific event is not something to joke about because it can be very hurtful to family and friends. Humorists are usually pretty funny for most people. Humor is meant to be amusing and produce laughter by using messages many people can relate too. Comedians make fun of serious topics to add humor to it and turn it into a joke. In the United States, we the people have freedom of speech and comedians can speak their own opinions. However, if you work in a professional environment such as a doctor, then you might want to not express your thoughts so freely. I don’t think people should let humorists offend them such as a racist joke. It is not intended to be taken seriously because comedians are allowed to use offensive and foul language to make their audience laugh. Even though, humorists have said some pretty hurtful things in the past and still do today, they can sometimes push the…

Comedians are allowed to speak their mind while regular people who work in their professions such as doctors, teachers, or police officers are not allowed to voice their opinions as freely because it’s inappropriate to do so. Maybe this is why people enjoy comedy, for a good laugh but also whatever the comedian jokes about you can relate to due to the fact that you have certain thoughts on the subject. An example would be in one of Kevin Hart’s stand-up comedy acts, he talks about how his father use to be a crack head and stole a police dog while it was on duty because Kevin wanted a dog. He also mentions that his father gets kicked out of the house due to the his mother not liking him on drugs, so every time he came to visit Kevin and his brother the father couldn’t go past the second step on the stoop which he never did, his feet always stayed on the second step. He gets into an argument with the mother about not passing the second step and during the argument the father does the dance that Kevin Hart says all crack heads do which is called the hula-hoop. Throughout maybe fifteen minutes of the stand-up comedy, Kevin Hart talks about his father being a crack head.…

Humor is the ability to laugh at yourself and others to lighten the mood and not get too overwhelmed by a situation. If you can not do this then life will become extremely hard to cope with and often become too much to handle. The main character in the “Darkness at Noon” always has to laugh to keep him from getting aggravated at the commonly occurring situations he is put in. The story itself is written in a very comical way to make the very upsetting parts seem less hurtful then they actually are. An example of this is when the main character Harold and his father were playing basketball and two girls came up to comment on their skills.…

According to actual definition, humor is defined by mood and state of mind. This is plausible because humor isn’t understandable unless you are conscious about the relevance. On that same note, a movie pertaining to humor needs to be careful about what it portrays. If you stick with one type of humor; there is the off-chance of losing appeal and comedic value for the vast majority. The humor induced film, DeadPool, is relatively a good comedy; but has some obvious drawbacks by only attracting those who like crude humor. Making this a comedy that only a few will enjoy.…

In our daily life, we all live with humor. Humor is a very essential part of our life. Nevertheless everyone doesn’t perceive humor in the same way. Man and woman have different views toward humor. That’s why some people say that humor has a connection with gender. In his article Christopher Hitchens has mentioned various reasons for women not being as funny as men. I believe Hitchers has captured most of the fundamental truths about humor and gender. Men are funnier than women because they want to be superior with no regard of the consequences, unlike women who tend to be fair and analyze the consequences of a joke before laughing at it.…

Popularized in renaissance drama, comedy was defined in Shakespearean times as stories that had happy endings for the protagonist. Comedy has expanded beyond that because there are so many types of comedy and happy endings is a quite a broad definition for comedies. Many people have darker senses of humor which do not always involve happiness. Satirical comedies also are not necessarily “happy”. Comedy is truly based on the way you were raised.…

I believe it is important to have a good sense of humor as a human being because you can differentiate between offensive humor and humor that raises a serious issue but also gives you a good laugh. Alleen & Nilsen (2006) also argue that perceptions of humour are dependent on whether an ethnic joke comes from the inside or outside. In other words, Alleen & Nilsen (2006) argue that when humour comes from the insider it is deemed as acceptable or expected behaviours, however when the jokes are coming from the outside it is taken to be critical or insulting (p.135). Alleen & Nilsen (2006) are suggesting that sometimes humour is not always understood by everyone, but sometimes it is just the specific ethnic group who understands it. This may create issues in the classroom as a teacher, because some students may take certain humor as offensive. However, it is important as an educator to teach…
