Combat and Beowulf
Beowulf Paper Beowulf is a story about a hero who does great things, like fighting monsters and dragons. Beowulf has specific changes from childhood, to adulthood, to an old man through his battles. When Beowulf was a child, nobody thought he would amount to anything, but he became strong and proved he could fight by defeating Grendel and his mom. Beowulf proved himself as an adult when he won the war against the Swedes for the Geats. Beowulf battled again, as an old man, with the dragon. As a child, nobody thought Beowulf would amount to anything, but he proved he could by defeating Grendel and his mother, two vicious monsters. People thought little of Beowulf, so did the great warriors, but he grew strong and courageous (ll. 2183-2189). Beowulf fought with Grendel, locked in combat. He defeated Grendel by tearing his arm off, then Grendel ran to his swamp and died (ll.745-819). When Beowulf grew strong, he proved his strength by defeating Grendel. When Beowulf defeated the Swedes, he proved his strength as an adult. In Geatland there was a blood feud with the Swedes and the Geats. Beowulf came and settled the blood feud with the Swedes by killing all of them (pg. 71). By defeating the Swedes, Beowulf showed his strength to his people the Geats. When Hygelac, the old king, died in battle Beowulf was crowned king. As an old man, Beowulf used his strength for a final time. When he used his strength he was able to slay the dragon. I would not use any weapons or armor if the dragon would not burn me. If luck is with me I may win and get more honor, but if fate has it then I will die here and leave you (ll. 2518-2537). Beowulf hid from the flames beneath his shield until the right moment. When he finally swung his sword the blade did not cut deep enough. When Wiglaf saw his master struggling he rushed to help. As Wiglaf distracted the dragon, Beowulf swung again. This time Beowulf’s swing was to string and caused the blade to break under his pressure. Then

Beowulf even defeated a dragon in his old age now that portrays power. Finally, Sir Gawain from Sir Gawain and the green knight. This quote that can be used to explain the courage it took for him to win at his challenge,” Sir Gawain laid hold is axe and lifted it high into the air…and then swiftly he slashed the naked neck.”(Pearl poet 161).To be able to do that without any hesitation requires intense courage sure what happened after that separates the men from the Hero’s. The person who had his head liberated from his shoulders got up picked up his head and walked up to do the same to Sir Gawain but he did not blink and through his courage his finished the challenge triumphant. At the time of the battle with the Dragon, Beowulf was old in age. His strength would be tested because he had not fought in over 50 years. Going into this special battle Beowulf knew what he was up against, “I am old, now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, if the dragon hiding in his tower dares to face me” (lines 626-628) By this it showed that Beowulf honor never left him and would always show. This battle stuck out. Like most battles, Beowulf fought with his famous sword and shield, but it soon ended when the dragon broke the sword and burned the shield with its hot flames. At this moment the battle began a dramatic shift because Beowulf was left with his hands. With the battle with Grendel and Grendel’s mother Beowulf could use his hands easily but yet this…

However, Beowulf runs into complications with this beast, “the iron Shield, and for a time it held, protected Beowulf as he’d planned; then it began to melt.” (720-722) Beowulf finds himself in defeat for the first time. Then Wiglaf, one of his kinsmen, comes to his aid and together they defeat the dragon. Yet, Beowulf is mortally wounded and is about to die. Before dying, he passes the throne to Wiglaf. Beowulf is also able to demonstrate his leadership qualities in his older days in Geatland. Following the death of Hygelac rises an important transitional moment for Beowulf. Instead of rushing to the throne he steps back and supports Hygelac son, the rightful heir. With this gesture of gratitude and respect of the throne, he proves himself worthy of kingship. In this part of his life, Beowulf must now base his decisions on the good of the people, rather then for his own glory, differ from his days as a heroic warrior. An example of this is when Beowulf decides to kill the dragon that had just mercilessly burned the Geats home’s and lands. Beowulf and his Thanes set out to kill the Dragon. Upon seeing it, the Thanes immediately flee, leaving only Wiglaf to battle at Beowulf’s side. This proves that Beowulf is still a courages warrior and a rightful leader, willing to risk his life to protect his people.…

Beowulf is a very courageous character and recounts his acts of courage to every person who will listen. In the poem Beowulf tells of his previous courageous actions in destroying a tribe of giants, defeating sea monsters in the night and returning from battle covered in his enemies blood. Beowulf has come to King Hrothgar to fight an ogre. A monster that has brought misery and death to the Danes for many years. This ogre, Grendel, killed thirty of Hrothgar’s men and caused the great mead hall of Herot to be closed. Beowulf tells King Hrothgar “the monster’s scorn of men Is so great that he needs no weapons and fears none. Nor will I” (lines 262-264) Therefore Beowulf intends to fight the Grendel without his armor or his sword. Beowulf may be so courageous because he believes so strongly in fate shaping his successes in the past. Beowulf believes that if it is his fate to win against Grendel then he will win. If it is his fate to die…

A thief stole from the treasure in which the dragon was guarding. Once the dragon noticed something was missing, he went on a riot trying to find the missing item (leading to disturbance amongst the people). Beowulf is motivated by his pride and the warrior’s code (which he knows he cannot break). He continues to brag about his accomplishments and states that he is going to fight the dragon for the glory of winning. Additionally, Beowulf chose to fight the dragon to defend himself and the people of his castle (because the dragon burned it down). As Beowulf is now much older and wiser, he is more cautious when it comes to preparing for battle. Despite his age, Beowulf still chose to fight to keep his pride. He is accompanied by his men, but commands them to remain outside (still wanting to gain glory and keep his reputation). In preparation, he chooses to wear his armour and helmet, along with a sword. Since the dragon can breathe fire, he orders armour made from iron rather than wood to remain safe. One can conclude that Beowulf is much more prepared to fight the dragon than when he fought Grendel and Grendel’s mother. In conclusion, Beowulf's sword fails for the first time as he is nearing defeat. Wiglaf comes to his rescue and Beowulf and him, together, attempt to defeat the dragon. The dragon bites Beowulf in the neck, but Wiglaf lunges forward and stabs him in the stomach. Beowulf has just enough power to stab the dragon in his side, killing him. Soon after, Beowulf dies from the poison of the dragon…

As an old man, Beowulf is up against a dragon. Although he is old, he still tries to take on the dragon. His loyal followers abandon him fearing for their lives. Instead of following them, Beowulf stays behind and tries to fight the dragon himself, along with only one of his followers who stayed behind. Beowulf demonstrating ambition is shown in the line, “In endless battles. I am old, now, But I will fight again, seek fame still, If the dragon hiding in his tower dares To face me” (625-628). This line is important because Beowulf is determined to defeat this dragon despite his age. Another example is shown in the line as Beowulf states, “I’d use no sword, no weapon if this beast could be killed without it, crushed to death…. I mean to stand, not run from his shooting Flames, stand till fate decides which of us wins” (630-639). This line is important because Beowulf is saying that he will stay until the one of them is dead, meaning he will fight to the…
