Communication Portfolio Project

The success of any relationship relies on one's ability to communicate well. Communication is important in relationships as it allows us to share our interest, concerns, and support one other; organize our lives and make decisions. Communication allows us to work together. Effective communication is based on the way we talk and listen, and how we respond with our body language. We can all learn how to improve the way we communicate but it takes more than words to create a safe, exciting and secure relationship. Too often the signals we send are not those we intend, when this happens, often both connection and trust are lost in our relationships. When we communicate, we can say a lot without speaking. Our body, our posture, tone of voice, and the expression on our face all display messages. If our feelings don’t fit with our words, it is often the body language that gets heard and believed. Nonverbal communication is a rapidly flowing interactive process. Self-awareness and an understanding of the cues you may be sending are paired with the cues others send and pick up. There are all different types of communication that people will use throughout their life. The most important type of communication is interpersonal communication. Interpersonal communication differs from other forms of communication in that there are few participants involved, the participants are in close proximity to each other, there are many sensory channels used, and feedback is immediate. Interpersonal communication is the information received from listening to what someone else is saying. Interpersonal communication always uses intonation, diction and enunciation to give meaning to information. Intonation, diction and enunciation sometimes give more meaning to what is being said than the actual words themselves. In the following paragraphs, I will explain to the reader the importance of interpersonal communication in business. My motivation for studying communications is to become a stronger leader and a more efficient communicator. I was not aware there was so much to the act of communicating until I began to engage in this process. In the beginning I thought it was about the act of talking, now to my surprise, I realize that this discipline is much more than just talking, it is about learning the art of persuasion, listening and language in all forms. Language in itself affects our thoughts and behavior. This is apparent through a variety of everyday activities. For instance, there is a specific way a person should act at church, or in a work environment, although I have found this is not a rule for all people. I have been experiencing a great deal of stress at work due to the lack of professionalism, disrespectful attitudes, gossiping and drama. This type of behavior has greatly affected others attitudes and work related relationships. I absolutely believe language whether verbal, written or how we carry ourselves is an important part of communication and can be hurtful to others in many ways if we are not aware or willing to change. I believe that once we become aware that our language is affecting the way we communicate and behave; we are more likely to be open to learning new effective ways to communicate. But, I also think we need to be willing to change our behavior, handle constructive criticism and consistently re-evaluate ourselves. Reading the text and other resources are fairly consistent in describing how rhetoric can be used to change the future, simply by understanding and changing what we are familiar with, has increased my knowledge of how rhetoric plays a role. Through this knowledge I am now more aware that appropriate communication can open many doors in my own life both personally and professionally. Understanding effective communication in my professional life will provide me with opportunities to excel in the social services arena, which is my passion. This course and the...
