DBQ – To what extent had the colonies developed a sense of their identity and unity as Americans by the eve of the Revolution?

Early settlers left their homes searching for freedom and looking to improve their lifes and the ones of their families. Britains monarchy was hard to escape and the british settlers in order to achieve their goals and escape this monarchy and totally vanish from any power and communications with it. Settlers were not yet strong enough to do this ,they had to be much more unified in order to become strong and be able to defeat a very strong if not the strongest nation in the world, England. Settlers had to find a new identity as Americans to become unified and and they did this by the eve of revolution.

Settlers started becoming unified and finding their identity when they realized that they were not that different and they could get along well. In Document H, Hector st. John Crevecoeur says that the American is either a European, or descendant of an European, hence that strange mixture blood which you will find in no other country. He said he could point out a family that has as a grandfather an Englishman, whose wife was Dutch, and sons were married to a French woman . He says that this man is an American who is leaving behind him all his ancient prejudices and manners, and recieves new ones. This clearly shows us that they have acepted them as Americans and they were unifying more and more. People were embracing this idea fast.

In this passage, Hector st. Jhon has a vision towards a promissing future that will eliminate all European prejudices and the sevility of disposition which pverty had taought him. This was the start of something new, America was going to be a nation in which all races were made into one race of men and they will cause great changes in the world.
