Influences that Affect One’s Thoughts
As an individual we are constantly thinking about random facts or what we are going to do today with whom ever, what I should I wear, oh I forgot to my homework for this class, or so and so is attractive, I wonder if I am going to run into them today. We also have many influences around us that shape our thoughts. We don’t notice it consciously but we are allowing others to form our character through the example we see them live and the act they put on for the world.
As individuals we say that we are our own person and independent and unique. But how much are you really you? “Individuation is the process of learning to differentiate oneself from others” (Plummer pg. 2 P2). In college especially our thinking process is being changed and shaped with each new teacher and class. They tell us what to learn, how to learn it, how they want the homework, and what they expect from us in the class. “ I worry often that universities may be rendering their most serious students, those who have been ‘good’ all their lives, vulnerable to the Ophelia Syndrome rather than motivating them to individuation”(Plummer pg. 2 P4).
I have noticed that attending college I have changed my thinking habits drastically from what I was doing in high school. While in high school, I was a “good” student and attended all of my classes, took good notes, and got mostly A’s in my classes. I graduated with a 3.7 GPA and ACT score of 25. I thought I was doing “good” until I came to college and everything changed. I do more studying now than I have ever done in my life. I go to study groups now and I go to the tutoring sessions because it isn’t embarrassing to go to them now. Teachers here have had such a immense impact on my learning skills. My math professor from Fall 2010 semester really cared about my grade and gave me advice that helped me be more diligent in how I manage my time and how I studied.
