It's taken me 18 years to realize how much of an influence my mother has had on my life. She is the type of mom that will listen, without judging. She will help anyone in any way she can. She's a mother that not only has time for her own children, but makes time for her community and church.
    Growing up with such a great role model, I've developed some of her same characteristics. I've become a great listener, someone that is willing to help however I can and also giving back to my community.
    Being a good listener is not a quality that I knew I had until my friends kept coming to me with their problems. They appreciated the fact that someone was willing to just be there. I was that person that they could count on to share their problems with.
My enthusiasm to help people in need developed when I started volunteering with inner city youth. I noticed how much of a difference I made in their lives. There was such a fulfillment,   that I decided to mentor them. The satisfaction I experienced working with kids, led me to other programs in my community, including Teen Moms and Girl Talk.
    My mom has taught me many things, but the one thing that stands out is her love for others. She has   shown me how to put others ahead of myself.   I truly value my mother for her guidance and shaping me into the person I am today. [continues]
