The Six Features of Academic Style
C O F H E R the six features of academic style
Complexity
Written language is relatively more complex than spoken language.
Written language has longer words, It is lexically more dense and it has a more varied vocabulary.
It uses more noun-based phrases than verb-based phrases.
Written texts are shorter and the language has more grammatical complexity, including more subordinate clauses and more passives.
Formality
Academic writing is relatively formal, which means that in an essay you should avoid:
Colloquial words and expressions.
Contractions, can’t. wouldn’t.
Slang . I googled him.
Idiomatic language e.g. We cooking on gas.
Phrasal verbs e.g. pick up, look into.
Personal pronouns I, you (except in reflective writing, lab reports and descriptive writing).
Objectivity
Written language is in general objective rather than personal. It therefore has fewer words that refer to the writer or the reader. This means that the main emphasis should be on the information that you want to give and the arguments you want to make, rather than you. Your arguments should also show balance and both sides of .the issue.
Explicitness
Academic writing is explicit about the relationships int he text. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of the writer in English to make it clear to the reader how the various parts of the text are related. These connections can be made explicit by the use of different signalling words. (PEE Point, example, empirical evidence.)
Hedging
In any kind of academic writing you do, it is necessary to make decisions about your stance on a particular subject, or the strength of the claims you are making. Different subjects prefer to do this in different ways. Using verbs such as might/may/could and reporting verbs gives extra detail/protection of your position.
Responsibility
In academic writing you must be responsible for, and must be able to provide evidence and justification for, any claims you make. You are also responsible for demonstrating an understanding of any source texts you use.

An adept writer usually depends on an existing way of writing which they learnt from others. The basic procedures of academic writing can be found in the templates which would help students to be familiar with conventional writing patterns and to make more sounded arguments. The most essential template in the book is the “they say, I say” template that teaches students to react to the arguments made by other people. The authors believed that a well-argued academic writing should include the opinion of others so that readers will know why there is a need to make an argument. The arguments that writers respond to do not have to be an eminent writer or the audience. From the template, we can learn that we do not need to be restricted to agreement and disagreement. We can agree and disagree at the same time. In addition, templates can help students to make more complicated moves…

I think the most important part of the writing process is formatting because without the proper formatting the reader wouldn’t be able to know what direction the context is going in. I can use this writing process in the future by using the correct formatting so that not only can the reader understand my view against the subject but also because a correctly formatted writing lets the reader know that you know in great detail what your subject is about.…

Communication is one of the most challenging skills for me. When learning this new challenging skill, I am asked to initially overcome fears against the odds, which slowly appear surmountable with the passage of time. For me the ability of communication is like building a tower, then writing skill is a part of the tower and I call it “wall brick”. In order for this tower to stand the bricks must be strong. Though flourished rhetoric in writing can enhance a paper in some aspects, I believe that a logical structure is the key to quality composition. Wring, in any language, was never appreciated by me. Thus I just had some inferior bricks at first. I kept those low-grade materials and tumbledown “tower” for a long time until I transferred to another high school where I met my wonderful teachers. I used to hate writing, but when I entered my new high school the way I write has been totally impacted and was deeply branded.…

    Clear and Concise Prose

The purpose of writing is to inform and entertain. To do this, clear and concise prose is needed to deliver essential points with impact and meaning, whilst still sustaining the reader’s attention. To get the point across, the text needs to keep to the topic and remain relevant, avoiding anything that is unnecessary. An incorrect use of technique such as rambling or jargon can obscure the purpose of the text. A concise style of writing uses a direct, simple manner without embellishments, to keep the reader involved and motivated. A reader seeking information will become bored and confused if sentences become to long and wordy. If the writing becomes vague and repetitive, then it becomes ineffective as the meaning gets lost. The diction of grammar and punctuation is also vital to communicate the right meaning.…

We use writing and require communications skills on a daily basis. This could include such things as emails, letters, presentations, meetings and conferences. Communication and writing skills are quintessential in our lives. It’s unwanted to read a paper with the way you may speak with your friends. In certain environments, it’s required to display yourself in a certain way. As with school and career, displaying good posture, ethics, and communication skills will greatly improve your goals aligned in the future.…

Welcome to WritePoint, the automated review system that recognizes errors most commonly made by university students in academic essays. The system embeds comments into your paper and suggests possible changes in grammar and style. Please evaluate each comment carefully to ensure that the suggested change is appropriate for your paper, but remember that your instructor's preferences for style and format prevail. You will also need to review your own citations and references since WritePoint capability in this area is limited. NOTE: WritePoint comments are computer-generated writing and grammar suggestions inviting the consideration and analysis of the writer; they are not infallible statements of right/wrong, and they should not be used as grading elements. Also, at present, WritePoint cannot detect quotations or block-quotes, so comments in those areas should be ignored. Please see the other helpful writing resources in the Tutorials and Guides section of the Center for Writing Excellence. Thank you for using WritePoint.…
