Cochlear Implants

A lot of the people featured in this informational documentary had extremely strong willed opinions which I thought was interesting to watch. I wish that there had been more resolution between family members by the end of movie but there wasn’t. I thought that this was a good film because it served to be extremely informative, but seemed fairly unbiased. Hopefully it was, because it didn’t really sway me to be pro or anti-cochlear implant. Although the hearing grandmother was very strongly opinionated and preached her beliefs a lot. I seemed to agree with her on most things, or she was at least very persuasive. I liked her attitude of not thinking about you, but having the child’s best interests at heart. Will they have more opportunities as a deaf person, or a hearing person? I know they will be fine in the deaf world, and that they will be successful, but you have to think of society as a whole. Where will they get the best education, be treated the best, have the most opportunities? Unfortunately deaf people don’t have the same kind of opportunities as hearing people, I am not saying it is something that I agree with, it is just a fact. At hearing schools they are focused more on academics and application, while children who attend a deaf school average in a 4th grade reading level. But I am also not sure what I would do if I had a child who was deaf. I would want them to have the equal opportunities that everyone else has. But I wouldn’t want to force something on a baby, but what if by the time they are old enough to make the decision for themselves it’s too late? I don’t understand why it is such an insult to people who are deaf if other people get an implant. I understand the concept of being proud and embracing your deafness. But what’s so wrong if you want more in life? Why is it bad that you want to listen to music, and be able to communicate with everyone? You can take the speaker off, and you are deaf again!!
