As I am sitting waiting to interview Mindy, I can feel the hustle and bustle of having two small children at home. As I look around I see a mound of multi-colored legos on the floor waiting to be put together. In the air I smell a faint smell of nail polish and Avon perfume from a mommy-daughter day at the pretend salon. Mindy gets the children busy with some cartoons on the tv and come coloring books so we can chat for awhile.
In April of 2010 Mindy was told that the company she had worked for was closing the doors and would be consolidating. Mindy had worked at this company for twelve years. It was her one and only job since graduating high school. I asked Mindy to describe feelings she had when she was told her job would be dissolved in sixty days. Mindy replied with a slight nervous giggle, “Where do I begin? My first instinct was sheer panic. I did not know what my family and I would do.” Mindy went on to tell me that she was afraid and scared for her own family as well as for her many family members that had worked at the company too. Mindy’s mother had worked for the company for many years and it was her parents’ main income source. Mindy’s father is receiving disability for an on the job accident that left him unable to work. Mindy also has a widowed grandmother that worked at the company part-time to compensate her social security benefits.

Mindy gets up to settle an argument between her two year old son and three year old daughter over the remote control. When she settles the argument we proceed to talk about her future and where she goes from here. Mindy tells me about an injury to her... [continues]
