City at Night
I live on the ninth floor of the tallest building in the city. I often sit in my window and watch the drama unfolding below, seeing as I overlook the slum areas of Creedville. It is always darker down there. From the things I have witnessed, I have developed a great fear of being out after 9:00 pm. Most nights I would rather spend sitting in my only window watching below.

One evening I had just sat down to watch the darkened scene below, when I saw a young looking man walking quickly toward a running car, parked under one of the only two street lights. He appeared to be nervous as he continued to look back over his shoulders. I watched more intently now. Then, just as suddenly as I noticed him, I saw three men in black, almost concealed in the darkness, moving swiftly up behind him. I watched as the shortest of the three pulled a gun out and began firing at the lone man. When I saw him hit the ground, I about fell out of my chair. Just as quickly as the three appeared, they vanished into a pitch black alley. I sat there trembling from what I had just witnessed. Too scared to call the police, I finally retreated to bed.

There was another time; I believe I witnessed a woman getting mugged. From what I could tell it seemed to be a teenager mugging her. He jumped out of a car parked in the shadows. Swiftly he attacked her from behind hitting her in her legs. When she dropped to the ground, it appeared he was demanding her purse, for she quickly handed it over to him. He threw it into the car, and then he hit her again in her side. She appeared to be taking her jewelry off and handing it to him. Once he had her belongings, the young thug jumped back into the car he had leapt from. As he sped away, I watched the poor woman slowly stagger to her feet and escape the dark street into a small corner store. I wondered if they had also witnessed her attack. It took about an hour for the police to show up, and they were gone in fifteen minutes. I never saw the women emerge

My first victim was a woman – white, well dressed, probably in her early twenties. I came upon her late one evening on a deserted street in Hyde Park, a relatively affluent neighborhood in an otherwise mean, impoverished section of Chicago. As I swung onto the avenue behind her, there seemed to be a discreet, uninflammatory distance between us. Not so. She cast back a worried glance. To her, the youngish black man – a broad six feet two inches with a bear and billowing hair, both hands shoved into the pockets of a bulky military jacket – seemed menacingly close. After a few more quick glimpses, she picked up her pace and was soon running in earnest. Within seconds, she disappeared into a cross street.…

The horrible accounts of the holocaust are vividly captured by Elie Wiesel in Night, an award winning work by a Holocaust survivor. It describes his time in the Holocaust and helps the reader fully understand the pain he went through. In the text, Elie continuously mentions how he is losing his faith to god. It is evident that he has nearly, if not completely lost his faith during the events of the holocaust. In the memoir, Night, Elie Wiesel’s faith changes because of the absence of God, the dehumanization of the prisoners, and all of the death that surrounds him.…

When people are told they are something over and over and over, they may begin to believe that it is true, and indeed they begin to become it. In the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel there is a use of a heavy symbolism. The most redundant and most important symbols that are used throughout his memoir are those of animals. In this memoir the constant comparison of the Jews to animals is used in a negative connotation and so that we see how the Nazi’s really were dehumanizing the Jews as a whole. Some of the major animals that were used for symbolism include cattle, dogs, and lambs. Not only was the symbolism used to show how lowly the Nazi’s felt about the Jews, but also to show that continuing to call them these various animal names and treat them like the animals began to make them actually behave like these animals would, and by that they were dehumanized.…

The dark of night lay subdued upon me like a stifling blanket, hindering my escape. Running beneath the twinkling of stars, I checked my pocket for the security of my blade. I grasped the handle with a sense of dependence for the cold rigid grip. After running for some time, I found myself near a soldier in a wheat field. Without hesitation, I delivered the soldier to death, beginning my mission. Observing his eyes rolling into his head, his jaw relaxing, his chest resting upon the dirt, and the smell of fresh blood—ha!—I knew I would never turn back. After I had committed my first murder, I became heavily devoted to killing with a bitter taste of sweetness for my homicide tallies. After I had killed my first soldier, I knew to depart far from the scene.…

It is 11 o’clock at night, on the 30th of July 2005. A man is in his home with all his doors locked, a precaution taken against a serial killer in the area. Suddenly, he hears an unexpected noise that sounds like a car in his driveway. He stands up and goes to explore what the sound could be. He walks down the hallway and enters his living room. Darkness engulfs him as all of the lights suddenly go out. Standing very still, he hears noises coming from another part of his house, and then footsteps and a strange, maniacal sort of laughter coming closer and closer. He turns himself around desperately, but he can't seem to place exactly where the sound is coming from. Then it’s too late. A phone flashes in front of his face, and he feels the cold…

It was around midnight on Friday when I was walking down the street. Tired and concern about the time I was walking fast to the bus stop in one of the most impoverished areas of the town. Just when the darkest street approached I saw a man standing by the side as if he was waiting for me to come. My heart started to beat faster and faster as I was walking towards him and my hands were suddenly sweating, I tried to focus myself on the light at the end of the street and walk by him discreetly but my fear was so obvious that I couldn’t help but run and hold my purse tight to my chest. The words mugging, raped and even death were crossing in my mind as replacing the lack of air in my lungs. While I was running to be “safe”, I decided to make sure that he “the mugger” was not following me but he was! That made the situation even worse. When I finally got to the bus stop I saw him menacingly close, I couldn’t breathe nor take one more step then I thought to myself, this is it! I’m done, he will kill me. But to my surprise he was just running to see if I was fine and asked if someone was following me to hurt me.…

"At approximately 3:20 on the morning of March 13, 1964, twenty-eight-year-old Ms Catherine (Kitty) Genovese was returning to her home from her job as a bar manager. She parked her red Fiat in a nearby parking lot, turned-off the lights and started the walk to her second floor apartment 35 yards away. She got as far as a streetlight when a man grabbed her. She screamed. Lights went on in the 10-floor apartment building nearby. She yelled, "Oh, my God, he stabbed me! Please help me!" Windows opened in the apartment building and a man 's voice shouted, "Let that girl alone." The attacker looked up, shrugged and walked-off down the street. Ms Genovese struggled to get to her feet. Lights went back off in the apartments. The attacker came back and stabbed her again. She again cried out, "I 'm dying! I 'm dying!" And again the lights came on and windows opened in many of the nearby apartments. The assailant again left and got into his car and drove away. Ms Genovese staggered to her feet as a city bus drove by. It was now 3:35 a.m. The attacker returned once again. He found her in a doorway at the foot of the stairs and he stabbed her a third time, this time with a fatal consequence. It was 3:50 when the police received the first call. They responded quickly and within two minutes were at the scene. Ms Genovese was already dead. "…

Day and night are complete opposites, so there is much to contrast. I am going to explain both, and elaborate on why we choose the day to walk among the most.…
