Cinderella
Cinderella
I grew up hearing the Walt Disney version of Cinderella. I believe, as in possibly most, that the Walt Disney version of Cinderella was the original one. However, there are hundreds of versions of this story; one such version was written by The Brothers Grimm. There are some key differences between the Grimm’s and Walt Disney; godmother, trying on the slippers, and the marriage ceremony.
Tin the Walt Disney version Cinderella had a godmother. The godmother used magic to create a ball gown dress. The godmother also created a carriage made from a pumpkin to take Cinderella to and from the ball. The Grimm’s version of Cinderella did not have a godmother. Cinderella did not have a carriage made for her. She had to walk to and from the ball.
In the Walt Disney version the two stepsisters tried on a glass slipper that would not fit. In the Grimm’s version the slipper was made of gold. The first stepsister couldn’t get her foot to fit into the slipper so the stepmother said, “Cut the tow off, for when you are Queen you will never have to go on foot!” After the prince saw the blood coming from the shoe, he made the other sister try on the shoe. She too couldn’t get her foot into the shoe so she cut off her heel to make it fit.
In the Walt Disney version Cinderella left her stepmother and stepsisters at her old home, while she went to the castle to marry the prince. In the Grimm’s version Cinderella still got married to the prince but the stepsisters went to the wedding. When the bridal procession went to the church, the stepsisters walked side by side each other. As they walked in the church two pigeons picked out an eye from both of the stepsisters. When the stepsisters switched places, the pigeons came back to pick out the other eye. “And so they were condemned to go blind for the rest of their days because of their wickedness and falsehood.”
