Topic: Cigarette Smoking and Teens
Smoking among teens has been increasing rampantly. Despite what we know about the dangers of cigarette smoking many teens continue to smoke for a variety of reasons.
There are many reasons why adolescents are picking up the smoking habit, one of which is peer pressure. It is common knowledge that if a teen is hanging out with an individual or group of friends who are smoking, he/she may get pressured into smoking when offered a cigarette. They want to fit in so that they don’t get teased or even feel ashamed because they refused to smoke the cigarette. Promotion or availability of cigarettes is also another way teens get influenced. By watching adults such as relatives, parents, aunts and uncles smoke, teens could also pick up the vibe. In their minds they could be thinking, “If they can do it, why can’t I?” Even a role model could influence youth into this practice. Being a role model to a child/teen means that you are to set an example for them and whatever you do they are going to think is okay for them to do as well, even if what you are doing is wrong. If they see you smoke a cigarette, they are going to want to do it to because they see you doing it. Accessibility to cigarettes is another reason why teens become so fond of smoking. It has become so much easier to buy cigarettes now than it used to be. They are selling them everywhere from the corner store, grocery or pharmacy store like Walgreens, to people on the street selling a “loosey” (an individual cigarette) out of their house for 50 cents. Believe it or not a lot of people under age of 19 are using fake IDs to buy packs out of stores that require an ID. Because fake IDs are becoming more difficult to make out, people think they are real. This makes it easier for teens to get a cigarette quicker without realizing they are picking up a bad habit.
