Abstract
This essay examines the opposing view points of the legalization of Marijuana and the stereotypes associated. This paper explores the history of Marijuana, and the impact to society. The majority of the research conducted for this paper emanated from publications and film.
There are definitely two sides of the spectrum when it comes to the legalization of marijuana. There is the side that is for the legalization of marijuana and there is the side that is against the legalization of marijuana. The argument against the legalization of marijuana is that it is a dangerous drug. The more research that is done in regards to this matter the more we realize that this drug is no more dangerous than alcohol or tobacco. Exploring the higher points of marijuana legalization is proceeding.
Most people alive today were born into a society that looks down on the consumption of marijuana. Not many even questioned why marijuana was illegal. People were taught it was taboo and therefore it was. Today, light is being shed on the reasons why marijuana prohibition exists. The more people learn about these reasons prohibiting the use of marijuana, the more people can understand that the reasons are no more than ignorance or hypocrisy from our society and government.
Marijuana has been completely legal for most of human history. Marijuana and hemp come from the same plant, cannabis sativa. They are both weeds that have been grown for a variety of uses. The first woven fabric was believed to be from hemp. In the early 1600’s, Virginia passed a law requiring that farmers grow hemp. The substance was not known to be used as a recreational drug until the early 1900’s. During this time, due to the Mexican revolution, tensions began toward Mexican-Americans whom had spilled over to the Western States. This was mostly because larger farms used cheaper Mexican labor.
