Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth in 1812 and died in 1870. He was not poor when his parents were not poor when he was born but his dad went bankrupt when he was twelve years old and they were all sent to debtor’s prison. Charles Dickens was then sent to work in a blacking factory and earned six shillings a week, he did that until his aunt died and they used the money that was left for them to repay all their debts. When they moved to London he decided to become a writer and decided to write about the poor, to raise the awareness of the rich Victorians who did not care about the injustices of their society. The conditions in London in the Victorian times was not very good because there was a constant smog over it and people drank the unfiltered water from the River Thames. The streets were full of dung, which led to the spread of disease; the houses were overcrowded (30 people to 1 house). There was no proper sewage or housing and many poor people were sent to workhouses or prisons. Many turned to crime as a means of support.

Christmas in the Victorian time would have been good if you were rich but if you were poor it was the worst time of the year. The poor would get some coal, nuts and oranges in the stocking. They would also have to pay to the baker to cook their goose because they wouldn’t have enough room to cook it by them selves. By comparison the rich at
Christmas would get rocking horses and other wooden toys. They would have cooks doing everything for them and they would eat turkey instead of goose. Our views of a Victorian Christmas tend to be idealised and exaggerated influenced by images on Christmas cards. Dickens wanted to show his readers the true reality. Scrooge is the central character of the novel ‘A Christmas carol’. Scrooge was a tight fisted hand to the grindstone. He was a ‘ squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner! Hard and sharp as flint from

Within A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens incorporates numerous themes by using the character Ebenezer Scrooge. Scrooge is a unsympathetic pennypincher that does not give any thought to helping others. He is a complicated fellow who cares about money and business more than anything else. The author Ebenezer Scrooge as a way to convince readers that money should not always be the first priority. Making Scrooge realize that family is more important helps prove the theme: money should not be the only focus in life in the story.…

For the live theatre show, I decided to watch “A Christmas Story, The Musical” directed by Valerie Easton at Vancouver Arts Club Stanley Industrial Aalliance Stage. The show focuses on a child named Ralphie, who wants a Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas.Valerie’s production captured the happiness and cheerful atmosphere during Christmas and also focus on emphasizing Ralphie’s desire of a BB Gun as his Christmas present. During the show, I was impressed by many design and technical production elements. For example, the quick changes, the adequate use of theatre stage and also the use of sets to change from fantasy and reality. However, the most striking elements to me are the set piece of Ralphie’s house and the sufficient use of rigging system.…

I think one of the themes in this book is that in life sometimes someone can have the best intenitons to change people and change a culture, but it doesent work and the person conforms to that life. On the otherhand one reason the person intiontentions of new ideas might not work because that person could possibly be before their time meaning that the person ideas could be great for people in the future, it might not work in the present. In this story if Carol was around during the women’s revolution then her ideas could have been viewed as forward thinking and those ideas could have been used and she could have had a better life and could have felt that what she was doing was worth it in the end but because came earlier the majority of…

One of the rudest person I've ever known was the Grinch from How the Grinch Stole Christmas. The reason why I think he is rude is because he actually threw a christmas tree at someone and he wrapped a little girl in gift wrap and then left her there like a christmas present. He also stole everyone's presents. At the end if the movie the Grinch had a change of heart and gave all the presents back. That is why I think he is the rudest person.…

Growing up poor was important for my intellectual development. I was angry, upset, and humiliated that my parents were (and still are) on welfare. I would go through life hearing people say that poor people are lazy, need to find a job, stop leeching off people who actually work, and so on. The people who typically said these phrases lived in their own ignorant world, without actual regard or compassion for others who aren't so fortunate. Not once did I view unwealthy people as "lazy", in fact, they are one of the hardest workers I have ever seen in my life.…

The movie I chose to critique is Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas”. The story is an animated musical that puts in a world where Halloween is always celebrated but also gives you a brighter side of the joy in the Christmas holiday. Although the movie is not directed by Tim Burton, Henry Selick brings an animated holiday musical to the big screen. Unlike other holiday movies like Rudolph the Red nose reindeer and Frosty the Snowman. The Nightmare before Christmas has a wide variety of misfit characters and scenarios that may not be very holiday friendly to the younger audience. For example there is a scene where Jack the Skellington (the pumpkin king) wants to kidnap “santy claus” and take over Christmas day. Jack is the main character that has many ideas for Christmas and means well but are not always the best plans. With Tim Burton’s ideas, Henry Selick took Tim’s ideas and visions and was able to bring the creative vision and imaginative characters, sketches and drawings and bring them alive and vibrant. In 1993 “The Nightmare before Christmas” became a legendary masterwork with great animation, songwriting and storytelling.…

Charles Dickens uses a lot of adjectives and many similes in order to present a clear image of what Scrooge looks like, as well as his personality, and this is before we have ever met him: “Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire. The cold within him froze his old features, nipped his pointed nose, made his eyes red, his thin lips blue; and spoke out shrewdly in his grating voice”.…

At the very start in the beginning of the Christmas carol book Ebenezer scrooge is a very mean and nasty man. He kept all of his money to himself and he loved it so much he did not share a penny of it to the poor or the sick. I have got a paragraph here from the book Christmas Carol explaining what scrooge was like. ‘Oh! But he was a tight-fisted hand at the grindstone, Scrooge! A squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner! Hard and sharp as flint, from which no steel had ever struck out generous fire; secret, and self-contained, and solitary as an oyster. The cold within him froze his old features, nipped his pointed nose, shrivelled his cheek, stiffened his gait; made his eyes red, his thin lips blue; and spoke out shrewdly in his grating voice. A frosty rime was on his head, and on his eyebrows, and on his wiry chin. He carried his own low temperature always about with him; he iced his office in the dog-days, and didn’t thaw it one degree at Christmas.’ This paragraph shows that Scrooge was not a nice looking man. He was very mean to his workers and not many people liked him. Nobody ever spoke to him in the street and said good morning or how are you. Even the blind men’s dogs appeared to know him; and, when they saw him coming on, they would tug their owners into doorways and up courts; and then they would wag their tails. So no one in the town liked Ebenezer scrooge at all. Then one night on Christmas Eve before Christmas, 7 years after Jacob Marley had died, this was the night that would hopefully change Ebenezer Scrooge’s life forever if he listened. So when Scrooge was walking back from work to his house he opened his front gate and got his door keys out. The door knocker on the top was a gold brass lion and very big. When scrooge put his keys in the key hole he looked at the knocker and the lion wasn’t there anymore no instead it was Ebenezer Scrooge’s former partner Jacob Marley. Scrooge jumped back and was very afraid but…

I believe there can actually be any number of characters in this short ghost story. My reasoning is, just like 'A Christmas Story', the man, just like Scrouge, was going to bed and could have been carring around a lot of wrongs that he did to people. Instead of these wrongs coming to haunt him, like the ghost of Christmas past, the worry that had been eating him up inside carried over to his hair piece, or wig, and with each worry or wrong he did strands of his wig turned white. The white coloring, would be the ghost of his wrong doings and is a visual representation of the hurt and pain he may have caused someone by his actions. If this is the case, the tone of the story would be sullen and sad because, looking at the wig would show how…

The origin or Santa Claus started from America's Dutch roots. After the American Revolution New Yorkers remembered their pride they had forgotten, Dutch roots. The way Santa looks came from Moore, who wrote a book for his family but then was published. This had been reprinted countless times under the more familiar title, “The Night Before Christmas.” Moore got the reindeer from northern Scandinavia and Finland because they often used them to pull their sleds. As time went by, more and more was added to the Santa Claus legend. The 19th century showed Santa wearing different colors, purple, green, blue, and addition to red. The Coca-Cola company was cited for showing what Santa looked like. Santa use to arrive with a flying reindeer ,and then…
