Course Description:

This single-semester, terminal course is designed to provide engineering students with a foundation in the fundamental principles and concepts of chemistry. Topics covered include atomic structure, nomenclature, chemical equations, stoichiometry, thermochemistry, chemical bonding, solution properties, kinetics, equilibrium, electrochemistry, descriptive inorganic, nuclear chemistry, and bio/organic chemistry. Quantitative problem solving, involving some calculus-based concepts, is emphasized.

Course Learning objectives

Upon completion of this course, students should have both an understanding of and appreciation for basic chemical principles and also an improved ability to identify problems, to develop algorithms to solve problems, and to thoughtfully implement those algorithms.

Grading Policy

The final grade in this course will be based on a percentage of points earned relative to total possible points. Listed below is the tentative point distribution for examinations, quizzes and the laboratory grade. However, an absolute grading scale cannot be determined until all scores have been compiled and evaluated. In order to optimize your overall performance use the following scale as a rule of thumb,
