B for Buster
People learn through experience, the experience has many obstacles but it teaches everyone for the future. Author Iain Lawrence shows no good deed ever goes unpunished in the novel “B for Buster”. The Protagonist, 16 year old Kak escapes his hometown Kakabeka Falls to find himself in England. He is a wireless operator on B for Buster, a bomber with his sturdy crew. As time goes during the war, Kak grows a close bond to the people he meets especially to one man, Bert the Pigeoneer. Kak, the dynamic character he is, shows that he is childish and an anxious young man. The novel “B for Buster” by Iain Lawrence is about a young man, Kak, who faces man vs. self conflict, it leads Kak into learning no good dead ever goes unpunished.
Kak’s childish behavior at the beginning of his journey makes him stand out from his crew mates. Kak was very excited to walk into his bedroom as he arrived. Kak says “I chose the one closet to the door, flinging myself across it with a cry of ‘mine!’ It was a dumb thing to do, for someone who was always trying to seem older.” (10) This quotes states his immaturity and showing everyone he is very foolish. Kak also shows his childish behavior is Kak wants to be a hero like Captain Marvel. He says “‘Shazam!’ I cried into the intercom. Someone laughed and I knew it was another stupid thing I’d done. I slapped my helmet and called myself an idiot. ‘Quoting Captain Marvel, what a fool you are,’ I thought.” (18) Kak’s actions shows he is childish from him thinking he is flying though the air saving the day, like Captain Marvel. He is disappointed at himself for saying something silly like that. This comes into the Man vs. self conflict because he is not mad at anyone else but himself. Therefore, this character trait shows Kak’s childish behavior.
During the novel, Kak is very anxious whether if it is flying or Kak regrets his choice of going into the air force. Kak is eager to fly his first op. He says “The hours seemed endless. We

“Pretty girls in fine dresses and stylish bonnets filled the open carriage that came up the hill from China Street and turned down the main dirt thoroughfare, Washington Street.” This is how local author, Gordon Cotton, begins his story about the famous brothel, 15 China. If one would try to locate 1500 China Street today, they would find a three way stop; the last number on the street being 1625. Though the house was torn down in 1970, its stories still last, in Vicksburg and all over the world. “Only a few years ago a ham operator here made contact with someone in Hong Kong… The man halfway around the world immediately asked the Vicksburger, ‘Is 15 China still in business?’” If one asked a true Vicksburger today, they would be filled with stories of the famous home, as it has always been a topic of provocative conversation. Though the house is an object of fable and story, it truly did exist as a brothel. Therefore, in accordance with popular belief, 1500 China Street existed as a brothel until the mid-nineteen hundreds (Cotton 1).…
