1. Children and young people that are self-confident, assertive, self aware and that have high self-esteem are less likely to be vulnerable to abuse. In order for children to feel safe and protected they need to feel good about themselves. A child with high self-esteem will do better in many aspects of development. All child care providers can support a childs self-esteem and self confidence by: •Giving lots of praise and encouragement.

Encouraging independency and choice, and providing many things for them to try out. •Teaching children how to be assertive.
Encouraging co-operation, respect and tolerance between children, and by staff giving a positive example for children to follow.

2. Resilience is the ability to deal with the highs and lows of life, and is based upon self-esteem. It is of great importance that we encourage and teach children to be resilient as the more resilient the child the better they will deal with life as they grow and develop into adulthood.

3. Many factors can support a child’s resilience, most of them are things as a early years provider I actively do such as give children the confidence to try something new or encourage them to try something independently even if it something small like walking along a balance beam un-aided the effect is has on their confidence has only a positive outcome.

4. Childcare settings together with agencies such as childline or the NSPCC have an important role in teaching children about looking after and keeping themselves “safe”. The most important thing for a child to remember is that they should never feel uncomfortable about someone they are with or something being done to them. As a child care provider I help children achieve this by:

Teaching them about the dangers posed by some adults and advising them on how they can reduce the risk these adults pose. •I teach them how to behave when taking art in activities which pose a higher safety risk then normal such as road safety. •...
