A beauty pageant or beauty contest, is a competition that mainly focuses on the physical beauty of its contestants, although such contests often incorporate personality, talent, and answers to judges' questions as judged criteria. The phrase “beauty pageant” almost always refers only to contests for women and girls; similar events for men or boys are called by other names and are more likely to be body building contests. Winners of beauty contests are often called beauty queens, Grand Supreme and overall Grand Supreme. Children's beauty pageants mainly focus on beauty, gowns, sportswear modeling, talent, and personal interviews. Adult and teen pageants focus on makeup, hair and gowns, swimsuit modeling, and personal interviews. Possible awards include titles, tiaras or crowns, sashes, savings bonds, and cash prizes. Beauty pageants have started to become more popular since the the premier of TLC’s hit show “Toddlers and Tiaras”, Where young girls compete for the high title in a beauty pageant. This show also gave people more of a up close and personal view in the world of beauty pageants.

There are many different views on beauty pageants. Some many people think it is exploitative and wrong. Others highly disagree, as do I. My thesis statement is that I do not think beauty pageants are in any way exploitative, I think they give children and young adults the chance to feel beautiful, show off their personalities, and be creative. When I was younger I was always asked to be in pageants and modeling, But my father never allowed it. And I never quiet understood why. Once I got older and realized what a controversial issue is was. Although I didn't agree, I understood where my father was coming from. I see how some people think beauty pageants and make girls superficial and “fake”, but I think it makes girls more confident, happy, and teaches them good communication and verbal skills.
