How many young girls are given Barbie dolls for birthdays, Christmas, or just as a nice gift for doing something good? Almost all girls have been given a Barbie doll, but have you ever thought about what that young girl was thinking when you gave it to her? Maybe their thinking I want look just like Barbie or maybe they think ohhh she’s so pretty. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a girl say she’s to skinny, her breasts are too big, and her waist is too small.
Barbie has become somewhat of a role model to young girls, an unrealistic role model. How many careers has Barbie had in her 50 years of life? Barbie has had over 108 careers in her short lifetime. What will you say to the girls that say I can be just like Barbie when their parents know that that impossible and unrealistic but yet they encourage their young girls to go for something that isn’t possible to achieve. Barbie says that wearing super short skirts and dress are ok when in reality it’s skimpy.
Why would any parent want to set their young girl up for a world of trouble when she gets older? Child beauty pageants are common today. They’ve been around since the 1920s actually. Most parents make their young girl do pageants because they want their child to gain prestige if they win. These kids don’t know what prestige is. They only know is I get to play dress up with a lot of other girls and I have to win or else mommy will be angry with me.
Child beauty pageants set that child up for failure when they get to be a teen. It starts the cycle to I think I’m better than you; I’m prettier than you the judges said so. It also starts a cycle that can lead to bulimia, anorexia, lowered self-esteem and depression. Whatever happened to that saying that says beauty is only skin deep? Whatever happened to love people for who they are not what they look like? Child beauty pageants are telling that child that you only get places based on your looks and that your morals are not important.... [continues]
