Myths can tell a tale of a person, belief, or a group that accomplishes something extraordinary, whether it is good or bad for society. “A usually traditional story of ostensibly historical events that serves to unfold part of the world view of a people or explain a practice, belief, or natural phenomenon”(Merriam-Webster). There is no greater example of the embodiment of a myth than the Italian mafia. Since the culture of mafia became mainstream, there have been two myths in particular that have stood out to people: the Robin Hood myth and the Sicilian Culture myth. Through the years the myths have evolved as they are drawn from a certain period of time: 1870-1950. The Robin Hood myth and the myth of the Sicilian culture have gone on to impact…

Throughout Antonio’s life, the religion he was born into that has helped shaped his life good or bad is Catholicism. Such as, when Antonio was so lost in his life, he looked to his religion to give him guidance. “I hoped that in a few years the taking of the first holy communion would bring me understanding” (74). Antonio was feeling so out of place even his family was, after Eugene and Leon left them. Andrew help Antonio realize that he and his brother couldn’t fulfill their parents dream, it had to be Antonio. Eventually, after Narciso’s death Antonio starts to question how god let Narciso die and Tenorio live. “I couldn’t understand why Narciso, who did good in trying to help Ultima, had lost his life; and why Tenorio, who was evil and had taken a life, was free and unpunished. It didn’t seem fair. I…

    Doubt the Play

The short play Doubt builds on many of the theme and central ideas of our class. One thing in particular that I noticed throughout the reading was the use of symbolism. John Patrick Shanley’s literary masterpiece unveils huge controversy that has surrounded the Catholic Church for many years. Most notable in his work is his outstanding use of symbolism. As defined by the dictionary symbolism is the practice of representing things by means of symbols or of attributing symbolic meanings or significance to objects, events, or relationship. Shanley uses this literary device to achieve genius suspense throughout the play.…

Ezio Auditore da Firenze is a man who will fight until his body collapses, and he won't fear the feeling of death. “To say that nothing is true is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile and that we must be the shepherds of our civilization. To say that everything is permitted is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic”…

As Romeo and Juliet begins with the fight scene, it is quickly moving. The fight scene between Romeo, Tybalt, and Mercutio was quickly moving, but after Romeo kills Tybalt, it slows down. This is effective because during the fight scene, they are not thinking, and they have to make an action quickly. After Romeo kills Tybalt, it slows down because he realizes what he just did is wrong, and a tear falls down his face.…

    The Sicilian Mafia

    • 3530 Words
    • 15 Pages

For some people, the mere mention of the name “Mafia” paints a portrait in the subconscious of burly or corpulent, thuggish-looking men, with peppered or jet black hair, a scar somewhere on their face, dressed in black or gray pinstriped suits garnished with a flower in their lapel, a fedora cocked angularly over their brow, their necks and fingers decorated in gold jewelry, and carrying a briefcase or any means of transportation for weapons or money. This image is typically cliché of the average early 20th century gangster found in big cities such as New York City and Chicago, and of those individuals found in classic films such as “The Godfather” and “Scarface”. So then, what is, or who are, the “Mafia?” From where did they come? What did they do? Where are they now? To truly understand what the Mafia is and represents, one must travel back in time, centuries ago, where the word, and the people associated, are rooted from an area known widely for its bountiful history of arts, war, and honor – Sicily, Italy.…

    Merchant of Venice

While the conflict between justice and mercy plays a key role in determining the outcome of The Merchant of Venice, this conflict is even more important because it provides a setting for the contrast between the rigid law and rules of the Old Testament and the concepts of mercy and forgiveness as taught by Christ in the New Testament. It is in the climactic trial scene that The Duke, hoping Shylock will excuse Antonio's penalty, asks him, "How shall thou hope for mercy rend'ring none?" He is referring to expectations of judgment in the afterlife. However, so is Shylock, when he counters, "What judgment shall I dread doing no wrong?" This exchange perfectly presents this conflict between of the Old Testament and the New, in which the former is seen to emphasize strict obedience as mankind's obligation to God while the latter stresses God's grace and mercy.…

    A Game of Chess Macintyre

In After Virtue by Alasdair MacIntyre, he discusses the metaphor of a child playing a game of chess to help explain his theory on practices, internal goods, external goods, motivation, and virtues. In his example, a child is promised candy for participating in a game of chess each week, regardless of the child’s performance. However, if the child wins the game, which is not an easy feat, the child will be rewarded with extra candy. Though the situation being examined is not complex, it is very successful in presenting MacIntyre’s arguments.…

The ambiguities of human nature are speculated, but are never firm, as it is in human nature to be ambiguous. Hamlet and Othello struggle with the betrayal of their friends and significant other. The theme of vengeance as it effect Laertes and Othello respectively portrays its motivations, as well as resulting regrets. In contrast, within the theme of choice, both Hamlet and Othello have differing methods for making decisions, Hamlet preferring indecision while Othello favours action. Therefore, though humankind is difficult to pin down to a specific set of traits, skills and motivations, it is in this diversity that breeds…
