Criminology

Charles Manson is an American criminal who was the leader of the cult “ the Manson family. He manipulated the people in his cult into committing the murders of the Tate and LaBianca family. The police didn't find out who was responsible for awhile. But in December 1969, Manson and several of his followers were arrested.. The trial began on July 24th, 1970. On January 25th, Manson was found guilty of first degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. On March 29th, 1971, Manson was sentenced to death. But, Charles Manson ended up not getting the death penalty when The California Supreme court outlawed it. Charles Manson now serves a lifetime sentence In California's Corcoran prison. In my eyes, Manson easily falls under the labeling theory. The labeling theory states that a theory of deviance that views deviance as a label assigned to behavior and individuals by figures of authority. That means no one is actually deviant unless specified by society. After Manson ordered his people to murder innocent people, our country labels him as an insane psychopathic serial killer. “The very name Manson has become a metaphor for evil,” says Vincent Bugliosi, a former prosecuter. “Anyone who knows Manson would tell you he's very intelligent, but the bottom line: he's just an evil, sophisticated con man cleverly masquerading behind the common image of a hippie,” said Bugliosi. “He speaks in riddles. You hear what he says, it doesn't make sense, then you type it up and there's an underlying message. You have to be very bright to speak in riddles. Charles Manson is a very bright, and evil man.”
