Charles Andre Joseph Marie de Gaulle was born in November 22, 1980, in Lille, France. Charles came from a Roman Catholic family, with a very long ancestry in the military. De Gaulle attended the elite Military Academy of Saint Cyr from 1909 to 1908, and then later on joined the infantry after graduating the Saint Cyr Academy. He fought in World War I, where he was wounded, then in World war II, in the battle of Verdun, where he was wounded again, and captured by the German army, and put in a POW camp, where he tried to escape several times. After two years and eight months of being in the POW camp he was released at the end of the war. Then he served Poland in the Polish Soviet war, as an infantry instructor, because of this war he began to support the ideas of armored divisions and mechanized troops, he believed that tanks would help in war. When the outbreak of World War II began, in 1939, Charles de Gaulle commanded a tank brigade that was attached to the French Fifth Army during the invasion of France,
In June 25th 1940, France surrendered to the German Army, at this point Charles de Gaulle left France and went to London, and gave his famous speech to the French people via the BBC, His words and encouragement inspired his countrymen and immediately
made him widely popular in his homeland where he called upon French servicemen of Air, Land and Sea to join him in the fight against Germany. This they called the Free French Forces, which fought in Syria, in French colonies, in Africa, and along with other free forces of Europe.
On August 9th, 1944 Paris was liberated by American and French troops. Charles retuned to the capital after four years of German occupation, there were various attempts from German snipers to assassinate him.
