In the 1980s a popular environmental slogan was "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle" and now "Go Green," is a popular message. Consider the Reusable Grocery Bags sold in markets everywhere. What are the pros and cons that you see in this latest trend? Give examples of the potential environmental impact.…
There are many communities, groups and people spend their time advocating how plastic bags damage the environment. For instance, Californians Against Waste, a non-profit organization founded in 1977, strives to prevent pollution and protect California’s environment many years. They sponsored and help complete almost all of California’s predominant recycling legislations. Recently, they have succeeded in contributing in exposing the plastic bag ban in public. They will keep on preventing plastic bags pollution, and they want to make sure the ban will be effective in California State. Not only do people stop producing plastic bags will impact the economy, the pollution they produce will also affect the economy. California Agasint Waste concludes that single-use plastic bags cost taxpayers money to clean up. They state that California spends around $34.2 million to $107 million every year to prevent people from littering plastic bags into the waters (“The Problem with Plastic Bags”). It is weird that people spend the money producing plastic bags to earn more; at the same time, they spend money again dealing with their disposal. Such huge amount of money can be invested into other fields to make society better, such as inventing new materials to decompose plastic bags faster. However, people are indifferent to the disastrous effect. Overall, there are hundreds of groups gather together to…
First, there is no mechanism or law to reinforce the use of reusable bags. For example, local governments seem reluctant to develop policy that will discourage the use of plastic bags. In order to reduce the impact of plastic bags, local governments must take some measure that will discourage the use of plastic bags. For example, in Singapore, Shoppers needing a plastic bag are encouraged to donate 10 cents towards the Singapore Environment Council to help finance its environmental activities. Shoppers are also encouraged to decline bags when making small purchases ( Civil Service College, 2014). Second, most supermarkets still provide plastic bags at no cost. Third, there is a lack of public awareness on the impact of plastic bags on the environment. As most of the participants noted during the our campaign. In response to this, I wrote a poem about the impact of plastic…

Some families that are still struggling on paying groceries so if there a fee on plastic these family will became having no money. Switch to reusable shopping bags. Reusable shopping bags made from renewable materials conserve resources by replacing paper and plastic bags. Reusable bags are convenient and come in a variety of sizes, styles and materials. When not in use, some reusable bags can be rolled or folded small enough to fit easily into a pocket.…
The use of plastic bags had been banned for the reason that it clogs sewers and drainage canals that lead to floods and other environmental damage. But, what people do not know is that it comes with a lot of benefits. First, plastic bags are cheap, reusable and can be recycled even when wet and can hold heavy weights compared to paper bags. Second, they use less energy when it comes to their production and it generates less atmospheric pollution when produced and transported and third, it is more weather friendly compared to paper bags and for it to be made, trees do not need to be cut. These are the main benefits of using plastic bags not only to the environment but also to mankind.…
An alternate policy that has been considered by Israeli parliament members is to prohibit plastic bags, and encourage the use of multi-use bags (Ayalon, Goldrath, Rosenthal, & Grossman, 2009). An exception in this policy is to allow plastic bags only for fresh food products to maintain hygiene (Ayalon, Goldrath, Rosenthal, & Grossman, 2009). This policy would dramatically reduce plastic bag usage, however the consumers will still purchase bin liners, which may be seen to contradict the policy and the risk of retailers switching to paper bags as a cheap alternative to multi-use green…
According to Article 2 Against :” Banning Plastic Bags”, taxes and bans don’t work, based on several reasons below. The communities thought that banning and taxing plastic bags would decrease the environmental problems. However, they had an opposite effect. After a 2002 tax on grocery bags in Ireland, consumers have used 10 percent more plastic bags than they did in Ireland’s pre-tax days. In San Francisco, people switch using plastic bags to paper bags was caused by San Francisco’s ban on plastic bags. Therefore, it caused 70 percent more energy to manufacture, 50 percent more greenhouse gas emissions and create five times more waste than plastic bags. Furthermore, people trying replace plastic bags with compostable bags and ban plastic bags won’t provide for recycling products. In general, instead of banning or taxing on plastic bags, promoting the recycling of plastic bags will decrease litter, save valuable resource and energy or keep environment safe.…
One of the most commonly used items in modern generation is the plastic bag. Sufficient, convenient, strong and cheap, plastic bags are seem to be perfect for marketing merchandise, foods, drinks and more. However, there are associated issues with the production, use and disposal of these bags which may not be known to most users but which are nonetheless extremely important especially to the environment. To fully understand the ecological footprint of plastic bags, determining the life cycle of it is needed. This report will outline the ecological footprint of plastic bags by assessing the immediate effects associated with their manufacturing, usage and disposal.…
The article highlights an idea to cut down on plastic bag usage in Singapore by imposing charges for them on people patronising supermarkets, provision shops and even food outlets and hawker stalls. The proposal deals with one of Singapore’s significant source of waste and it can be seen as a small move towards eco-friendliness. As with any other new initiatives, it is worth discussing its potential effectiveness, and any other impacts that the charges on plastic bags may have on the society. On the same note, examining such a green policy would also naturally lead one to ponder upon the “green” attitude of Singaporeans in general.…
Although the policy has had some successes, there is still some people prefer buying carrier bags from shops rather than bring reusable bags. Therefore, the government should increase people environmental awareness, enhance monitoring of carrier bags usage and develop new environmental products to replace plastic bags.…
The society's consumption rate is now estimated over 500,000,000,000 plastic bags annually. The Malaysian Federal Government is considering banning plastic bag for environmental reason. There are some big company have take the challenge to make “say no to plastic bag” campaign such as IKEA, AEON and Factory Outlet Store (F.O.S). There…
Plastic bags have rapidly becoming popular among consumers and retailers due to its convenience and functionality and it comes at a relatively low cost. Wastage and hygiene issue arises as these non- biodegradable bags are usually littered and not recycled. Technological advances that led to even lighter bags have worsened this problem. These lighter bags are often not suitable for reuse and heavy items have to be double bag, increasing the use of plastic bags. As a result, more scare land has to be converted into landfills to provide long- term storage for this waste.…
The article addresses the popularly debated issue of reducing the use of plastic bags in all kinds of stores that give out free plastic bags as carriers, especially supermarkets in Singapore. No government legislation has been implemented in Singapore so far to make it compulsory for retailers to charge customers on plastic bags, which has already been done in a few Asian countries. However, environmental agencies have been urging Singapore government to do the same while the government is encouraging big retailers to take the initiative to start charging for plastic bags.…
of nature degradation. Current plastic bag use and disposal, both by consumers and through waste management activities, not only create environmental problems, but also reinforce the perception of a wasteful society. Plastic bags as litter create a visual pollution problem, and affect our aquatic wildlife, while the heavy reliance on ‘disposable’ plastic bags by the Malaysian consumer raises questions of resource consumption and resource efficiency. Many of the grocery stores use the plastic bags as a tool to keep the things easy to carrying. Plastic bags aren’t just at the grocery store, there everywhere, landfills, the oceans and lakes, hanging on trees around our neighborhoods and suffocating wildlife. As a human being, I’m agreeing that plastic bags should be banned permanently. This is because plastic bags are not biodegradable, so where ever people leave them, they will stay, forever.…
