Characteristics of Orientalism, Prejudice, and Discrimination
There are some differences between Arabs and Muslims. Muslims are people that practice Islam. Muslims do not have to live in a certain area. They can be anywhere but what makes you a Muslim is practicing Islam. Arabs on the other hand do not have to be practicing Islam. An Arab is is a person that lives in the Arabian or Arab regions. Arabs speak Arabic and can practice any faith they so choose.
As far as I could find there has be no changes in policy concerning the treatment of Arabs and Muslims in the United States. We have laws in place protecting the way we treat all different nationalities. However, In the last two years President Obama has made big steps to show people that Muslims and Arabs are just people. Throughout the Bush time 67% of Americans had negative thoughts about both Arabs and Muslims. Obama has been working hard to change that way of thinking.
Orientalism is a way of depicting Eastern Cultures such as Arab nations. Some way to do that is to paint a picture that depicts the Middle East. Another way is a writer showing life in the Middle East. Also buildings can be designed with a Arab feel. This is also a form of Orientalism.
There are many ways you can promote tolerance of Arabs and Muslims. One way is to hold a culture day about Arabs and Muslims. A lot of people just don’t know anything about Arab culture that they just fear the unknown. If we work to educate people than they can understand and accept people for whom they are. [continues]
