Characteristics of Orientalism, Prejudice and Discrimination

      There are many differences between Muslims and Arabs, some more obvious than others, but the most defined characteristics are Muslims are a religious groups and Arabs are an ethnic group.   Muslims are followers of the Islamic faith and they believe in Alah.   Some women prefer to wear the traditional head cover.   This is a sign of modesty and to show respect.   And some men wear a skullcap or kufi based on tradition. Arabs are an ethnic group, who are identified more by their culture, linguistic or genealogical grounds.

      Orientalism the simplistic view of the people and history of the Orient with no recognition of change over time or the diversity within its many cultures. (Schaefer 2006)
To simply say, in which one sees people as “the other.   Examples would be confusing Chinese and Asians or one of my most common mistakes is Mexicans and Puerto Ricans.   These people are commonly stigmatized.
              After 9/11, some of the changes the United States made to policies concerning the treatment of Muslim and Arabic members were implementing programs that caused more harm to Arab and Muslims. There were more detentions centers and many were deported back to their native lands.   Airports put more security measures in place that stereotyped Muslims and Arabs and anyone of the Islamic descent.
              In my city of Schaumburg, starting in kindergarten, the school system started introducing a “there are no differences” policy.   And it’s sad to say but the kids have a better tolerance and there are no prejudices amongst them, more than the parents.   I see kids of all ethnic groups, as best friends daily. According to my boys, none of their friends see color as a issue.   It’s about who’s fresh and who’s the funniest and who has the largest personality.... [continues]
