The difference between Arabs and Muslims are of religion and a country. Arabs are ethnic groups that are collectively from different countries in the Middle East such as Lebanon, Egypt, or Palestine. This does not limit the population of these countries to be all Arab. Muslims are a choice of religion one may follow and can be found all over the world. As most religions believe in one God, the God Muslims believe in would be Allah. The beliefs and prophets can be similar to another religion such as Christians.
Due to the attacks that occurred on 9/11, profiling has become an issue that some of us have faced. A policy that has changed since then has been through the Justice Department, where the FBI is allowed to investigate Americans without any evidence of wrongdoing. This allows racial profiling and prejudice amongst anyone and everyone who may come off as a terrorist, singling out and possibly targeting Muslims and Arabs. In May 2008, Abdus Sattar Ghazali wrote about the terrorism that occurred the year before on the New York Police Departments on “unwarranted suspicions” and negative stereotyping against the Muslim Community.
Spirituality and diversity are two characteristics of Orientalism in terms of people. Orientalism is the stereotypical view one may assume from someone’s ethnic background. From this hate crimes can be derived from a persons prejudice thoughts of that ethnic background. For example, back to the 9/11 attacks, Muslims and Arabs are profiled and maybe targeted at airports and on the streets. The best practice in to minimizing these crimes is to educate and create awareness amongst the community.
This awareness can easily be brought up within schools and our community outreach. Understanding and educating each other on our cultures can bring this world together.
