    The difference between Muslims and Arabs are, Arabs are an ethnic group, and Muslims are a religious group.   Islam is the faith and a Muslim is a believer of that religion.  
    After the September 11 attacks, Americans felt more negative toward U.S. citizens of Arab and Muslim descent.   The Muslims and the Arab became scapegoat for any attacks that happen in the United States.   Mosques were vandalized, people were attacking Arab-appearance people, and all foreign-born Muslim men were told to report to the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to be photographed, fingerprinted, and interviewed.   The USA PATRIOT Act was passed in October 2001, had provisions condemning discrimination against Arab and Muslim Americans did not help because the Arabs and the Muslims found them being racial profiled, especially at the airports and border checkpoints.
    Orientalism and prejudice has contributed to hate crimes against Arab and Muslim Americans.   Orientalism is the simplistic view of the people and history of the Orient with no recognition of change over time or the diversity within its many cultures.   For example, Orientalism suggests a conflict between Christians and Muslims, but the two faiths are similar in many ways.   Both faith are based on a single deity, and worship the same God, but society wants you to believe that the Muslims do not believe in God.   Another example is, people in the United States do believe the mosque does not represent religious freedom and diversity or even a curiosity but a foreign threat.   It is thinking like this that can lead to prejudice and discrimination.   Not all Muslims and Arabs are terrorist’s people should not hate them for a small amount of people who did commit crimes against the United States.
