Paul is a stereotypical love struck teenage boy, he thinks with the wrong head and makes decisions based on his sexual lust rather than what's in his best interest, even when it comes to his physical safety. Various different sides of Paul are revealed throughout this scene but they are all a reflection of one common factor, his infatuation with Megan. “By home time each day she became a haloed vision, the vision lodged deeply inside me, especially the glowing hair.”Paul displays foolish courage, wit, cowardice and lust. This display of emotional diversity within one short scene allows the viewer to gain a more developed understanding of Paul's diverse character.
Paul displays his passionate lust for Megan multiple times throughout this scene. His first display of this lust occurs when he confronts Megan, asking her to the movies; after she denies his invitation he attempts to shock her and be anything but sweet and blurts out that he dreamt about her. Megan's unexpected giggle and witty remark of “How was I?” “Was I good?” catches Paul off guard. She then announces that she already has a man, instead of being deterred by this information, Paul was excited and wanted to find out more, little did he know this display of unusual affection and lust would lead to him find out who Megan's boyfriend is via a stern warning from a school bully who warns Paul away from Megan. The audience is becoming more aware of Paul's unordinary desire to pursue Megan and are then positioned to question his ability to think past the present and consider the repercussions of the future.
Paul's display of courage is a reflection of his shock when he is confronted buy Jimmy Pampas who says “Not worth a punch, you want to play with yourself do it in private. Just keep it away from Megan.” Paul lets his mouth get the better of him, firing back foolish wit which inevitably results in a rough beating. In stark contrast Paul then reveals his cowardly side.
