Thomas Hardy was born on June 2, 1840 in Dorset, England. Thomas Hardy was able to read before he could walk. Thomas Hardy went to school in Dorset. Thomas Hardy began school at the age of 8. In 1862, London architect, Arthur Blomfield, employed Thomas Hardy as a draughtsman. In 1867, Thomas Hardy returned to Dorset to work as a jobbing architect. In 1868, Thomas Hardy completed his first novel The Poor Man and the Lady, but it was rejected for publication. Thomas Hardy met his first wife on a visit to St. Juliot. Thomas Hardy wrote many books and poems. Thomas Hardy wrote Desperate Remedies, Under the Greenwood Tree, A Pair of Blue Eyes, Far from the Madding Crowd, and many others. After 1897, Thomas Hardy quit writing novels and wrote poems. Thomas Hardy’s last poems were Human Shows, Far Phantasies, and Songs and Trifle. Thomas Hardy died on January 11, 1928. Thomas Hardy’s heart was buried in Emma’s grave at Stinsford and his ashes were buried in Westminister Abbey.

Gabriel Oak has modest ambitions. Gabriel Oak did not care about how much money he made working, but he was one of the hardest working people in Far from the Madding Crowd. At the beginning of the story, Gabriel Oak was a contended shepherd. Gabriel Oak is a much laid back and nice man.

Gabriel Oak is also a diligent farmer. Gabriel Oak would do anything to get the job done. Gabriel Oak would do anything to do his best whether it was being a farmer or helping others. Gabriel Oak started to work for Bathsheba as a shepherd. Gabriel Oak had to do this because he did not have any money. Oak’s sheep got away and he had to get rid of his house because he didn’t have any money. Bathsheba was kind enough to give Gabriel Oak a job as a shepherd. Gabriel Oak worked hard for Bathsheba and Gabriel Oak also fell in love with Bathsheba on the job. Gabriel Oak is an outstanding farmer and works hard at everything he does.
