Character Analysis of Emily in William Faulkner’s A Rose for Emily
In the story A Rose for Emily, I think the main character Emily made fairly unjust choices. The one just choice she did make was to not pay her taxes because according to the previous Mayor, they were remitted. I feel like she was reasonable for not paying them because the town had made an arrangement with her and everyone in the town knew she didn’t pay taxes and the town took care of her, it was tradition and she was right to say “I have no taxes in Jefferson.”
Emily’s other actions were not wise or just. She quickly fell in love with a man and became attached to him. That is when the town became happy for her because in those times someone her age should have been wed. However, when the town and Miss Emily realized Homer wasn’t a marrying man and she reacted by poisoning him because she wanted to control him and didn’t want Homer to leave her. She did what she thought was right to make her happy but it only ended up being one of her unwise decisions
Emily’s motivation is having control over people in her life. When she was younger, her father had control over her and may have been abusive and when he died Emily was able to control him at that point, which is why she didn’t want to give up the dead corpse. I feel like she may have been Necrophilia and had a sexual attraction to dead bodies and wanted to control people, which she basically did in the house after he father died. She controlled her father when he died, she controlled Tobe who was like a dead man while he was a servant, and after she poisoned Homer, she controlled him.
Emily’s behavior greatly affected her servant Tobe. Tobe was obligated to Emily since he was a slave. Emily might have mentally enslaved Tobe as well, by convincing him that he didn’t belong in the outside world. He remained mute, kept to himself and remained in the house with her until she died. When Miss Emily died, he quickly departed and was free of her control.
The repeated use of the saying “Poor Emily” shows that the Emily got most of the towns’ people’s sympathy, which may have been what she wanted so she could control the town. She was “a tradition, a duty, and a care", they knew they had to care for her and she was always the talk of the town. She controlled their minds and gained their sympathy.
Emily is associated with a rose which is a symbol of love and portrays endless love and beauty, even when dead. This can be associated with Emily because when Homer was alive, she loved him and had the beautiful love she wanted. When he died, she still slept with him and loved him, she had he endless love since he would remain with until she died.
Emily was desperate for endless love, when she bought the poison, she didn’t say what she needed the poison for. If you read between the lines and try to interpret her reasons for needing the poison, you eventually come to realize she was going to use it to poison Homer because he wouldn’t marry her and love her like she wanted him to. So she quietly and secretly did what she had to get him to stay. Emily is a round character because she goes from being loveless and lonely to a sympathetic adorer. In her past she lost her loved ones. In the end she finds a way to keep the love of her life from disappearing like the rest. Even though Emily refuses recognize the changing world around her, she still changes and this makes her change drastic because she wants things to stay frozen in time.
Faulkner states that the "rose" was the story itself, the story is a salute to Emily. She never had a live of her own because it was at first controlled by her father. She reacted by taking control of her lover. Given her circumstances, this was the best ways he could do thing, in Faulkners opinion.

Miss Emily is first explained as a nice, sweet, and normal woman, though that all changed as her life went on. The death of her father was the flame that ignited all of this weirdness of Emily. After her father died, Miss Emily did not go out much probably because of grief over the loss of her father. “Because her father is the only man with whom she has had a close relationship, she denies his death and keeps his corpse in her house until she breaks down three days later when the doctors insist she let them take the body” (A1). This statement demonstrates her inability to let go of lost ones.…

In William Faulkner’s, “A Rose for Emily” Mrs. Emily Grierson is the most prominent character, illustrated by the narrator. Strong willed and determined, Emily’s performance has been characterized as strong and peculiar. The narrator touches on the fact that Emily could be intellectually insecure. In this short story Emily seems to be trapped in her ways, never wanting to seek the opportunity to develop her sense of knowledge or progress to alter the way she cooperates with the townspeople. This is demonstrated through countless situations in the story, the most significant being her denial of having to pay taxes, as she simply believes she do not have any. Further occasions…

Emily does not like change and after her father died she told everyone in the town “her father was not dead” (Faulkner 33). Emily has a very hard time accepting this situation. She keeps the body in the house and for “three days… they tried to persuade her to let them dispose of the dead body” (Faulkner 33). They succeed after several attempts to remove him from the house and when they do, they quickly bury him. This is foreshadowing the fact that Emily has a hard time letting the people she loves go and offers a motivation for Homer’s body which is discovered in the upstairs…

“Alive, miss Emily had been a tradition, a duty, and a care; a sort of hereditary obligation upon the town.”(391) The social class and her father fettered not only her behavior but also everything of herself. Without him she could not do anything except stay at home. She had been isolated from the outside world and the people whose social class was lower than theirs. “only Miss Emily's house was left, lifting its stubborn and coquettish decay above the cotton wagons and the gasoline pumps—an eyesore among eyesores.”(391) Her house was on behalf of her personality that she was noble, solitary and traditionally. Emily's decaying appearance matches not only the rotting exterior of the house, but the interior as well. Staying far away from people, gradually, she could not know how to get along with others. Being restricted by her family fame, Emily became much more autistic and did things unusual.…

To Emily her pride of death was not the ultimate end of her world, her life evolves in death and this shows that if she could not have her way with her father or with Homer, she would rather have them dead living with her. In this story, I could only assume that William Faulkner’s logical explanation for Emily’s behavior that life is no better than death, if she cannot have Homer to herself, then death is the only way to have him…

At first glance, the couple seem to be hitting it off because they went on their Sunday afternoon rides and at one point people thought they were eventually going to tie the knot “… after her father’s death and a short time after her sweetheart – the one we believed would marry her – had deserted her.” They were essentially the couple that everyone talked about through town even if it wasn’t positive publicity. But as slanderous rumors continue to spread and Emily’s reputation continue to be compromised, she eventually decides to poison Homer with Arsenic. I think we can agree, that it’s a little too drastic. By this point in the story, it was clear that the couple wouldn’t work out because of two simple reasons. One, they were having an affair and everyone in town wasn’t a fan and two, their relationship was deemed lowly because Emily is with a man whose social class is far beneath hers. Instead of walking away from the rumors or just ignoring them, she decides the best thing to do is murder by poison. The crime is classified as a crime of passion by Fisher because Emily isn’t able to have homer because of society’s judgement. The death of Homer is a message from Emily saying “If I cannot have you then no one will” and she proceeded by providing Homer with an ultimatum,…

Miss Emily is seen as superior to the rest of the community, and most are not even worthy enough to be in her presence. She even has a servant, Tobe, which is equivalent to how God has angels. Emily’s victim, Homer, is murdered by the use of arsenic; it can be said that Homer is put down by Emily, similar to how God put down Satan. The common sinners, or the community, greatly respect Emily, but show no veneration towards her companion, Homer. Although some believe Faulkner is attempting to point out sectionalist issues in this short story, he is actually attempting to portray two contrasting righteous characters and the conflict routine sinners frequently…
