Chapter 1
THE TITANS AND THE TWELVE GREAT OLYMPIANS
Titans they are the Elder Gods. They are enormous in size and have incredible strength.
IMPORTANT TITANS
CRONUS (Saturn) he ruled until Zeus dethroned him.
OCEAN- the river
TETHYS- Ocean’s wife
HYPERION- Memory
THEMIS- Justice
IAPETUS- important because of his sons
ATLAS- Bore the world on his shoulders
PROMETHEUS- the Saviour
THE TWELVE OLYMPIANS
They are superior, they are considered the highest gods
They are called Olympians because they live in Mt. Olympus, the highest mountain in Greece which is located in Thessaly in North East of Greece
The twelve Olympian gods are:

Zeus- ruler of heaven
Hera- Juno
Poseidon- Neptune, ruler of sea
Hades – Pluto god of underworld
Pallas Athena – Minerva
Phoebes Apollo

Artemis (Diana)
Aphrodite- Venus
Hermes- Mercury
Ares- Mars
Hephaestus- Vulcan
Hestia- Vesta

Zeus (Jupiter)
Zeus the Olympian
Greek mythology supreme commander
Some Greeks believe that he is one true god before Christ, most feared god
God of sky, enforcer of justice for both god and people Has the most devastating power
What we know about Zeus was written by ancient Greek author Hesiod around 700 BC, that book is called THEOGONY-> which includes a dynastic family rival that ends up with the world we know today
His breastplate was the aegis, awful to behold; his bird was the eagle, his tree the oak. His oracle was Dodona in the land of oak trees.
Hera (Juno)
She was Zeus’s wife and sister.
Daughter of Ocean and Tethys. When was the protector of marriage, and married women were her peculiar care. She punishes the many women Zeus fell in love with, even when they yielded only because he coerced or tricked them. Because of her hatred of a Trojan who had judged another goddess lovelier than she, the Trojan War didn’t end in an honourable peace. Her daughter was Ilithyia.
The cow and the peacock were sacred to her. Argos was her favourite city

Poseidon (Neptune)

    In chapter 2 of Edith Hamilton’s Mythology two Gods were introduced: Demeter and Dionysus. Although those two Gods were different, they also had numerous similarities. For example, both are correlated with rebirth and revival. Demeter and her daughter Persephone are in a constant cycle of death due to plants dying off in the winter and regrowing in the summer. Every winter Persephone would be taken by Hades but “she [rose] from the dead every spring” (Hamilton 61). Dionysus was also coordinated with the plant cycle, him being the God of the Vine.
