He knows more than the rest of the boys, as he knows how to blow into a conch, tell time by the sun, and create a signal fire “'I’ve been thinking,' he said, 'about a clock. We could make a sundial. We could put a stick in the sand, and then—'” (pg. 67). Not only, but Piggy is realistic when it comes to being on the deserted island, "Did you hear what the pilot said? About the atom bomb? They're all dead." (pg. 9). Ralph, another main character, wishes he was just as intelligent as Piggy, "Piggy could think. He could go step by step inside that fat head of his, only Piggy was no chief. But Piggy, for all his ludicrous body, had brains." (pg. 83). Without Piggy's thinking skills, there would be no chance of survival on the island.…

When Ralph approaches Jack’s tribe and blows the conch to call an assembly, we learn that the conch has lost its power among the boys. The conch represents order, and without it there is nothing to keep the boys in line. Even in his final moments, Piggy is still trying to get the boys to see reason. As Ralph is getting heated with Jack, Piggy attempts to get his attention and says “Ralph – remember what we came for. The fire. My specs.” After Piggy’s death, Jack orders Roger to torture Samneric into joining the tribe and makes the decision to hunt Ralph down and kill him. Piggy dying meant the absolute end of trying to reason with Jack’s tribe and any hope of peaceful civilization on the island. He is the parent figure and the reminder of moral among the boys, and once he is out of the way nothing held them back…

In the first few pages of the book we see that the boys are stranded on a uninhabited island. Thanks to Ralph’s conch, all the boys grouped up together. Once again as a group, they choose themselves a leader, which turned out to be Ralph, and once the formalities were over, who brings up the point that they’re stranded on an island with nobody’s knowing? Why none other than our loveable friend Piggy. “Who knows we’re here? Eh? Nobody knows where we are. Perhaps they knew where we were going to; perhaps not. But they don’t know where we are ‘cos we never got there.”(page 34) This shows Piggy’s more social side, because he expresses this idea to the entire group of boys, and showing the bond he has to civilization. We can see Piggy’s is a very civilized and sophisticated child, always remembering all the useful thing his auntie taught him. These two small yet very relative examples show the bond Piggy has to society.…

Piggy was a strong and good hearted boy, especially when the others teased him, took his glasses or talked over him. Even though Jack and his hunters again and again pushed him to the edge, he would stand strong and not lose his temper, and I greatly respect him for not letting his pride or emotions give in to the bullies. Another thing I valued in Piggy was that he was always supportive in the things I did, even if they went wrong or if Jack had something negative to say about it. Piggy had so many good qualities, that no one ever noticed which will be greatly regretted by many.…

Piggy had always thought of Ralph as a friend, even when the feelings weren't mutual. No matter what Ralph said or did to him, Piggy always followed his orders. When Ralph fell into a state of depression, Piggy was at his side consoling him and reminding him of the big picture. Simon always looked for the good of the group and thus chose to stick with Ralph. His morals wouldn’t let him join the evil camp of Jack. Unlike Beowulf, Ralph had nothing to give to his companions. No gifts, no rewards, and certainly no food. On the other hand, the sadistic Jack ensured everyone's loyalty by providing fresh meat and protection from The Beast. These were all things Ralph lacked for his followers. But then why did Piggy and Simon not abandon Ralph in a heartbeat? It’s because they had a something everyone else lacked, intelligence. Piggy and Simon showed their loyalty to Ralph simply because he was a sane and just leader. Unlike Jack, who only craved for power and the display of…

In the book, Ralph was empathetic and showed understanding towards the boys’ feelings. “‘Trouble is, we haven’t got enough people for a fire. You got to treat Samneric as one turn. They do everything together-’” (138) This shows that, even in a time of crisis, Ralph will consider everyone’s feelings before he acts. This trait also hinders Ralph because he does not realize how unproductive it would be to treat the twins as one boy until Piggy explains it to Ralph. This is an example of how he may understand the boy’s feelings, but he must use his wisdom to make the best decision for the whole group. Dwight D. Eisenhower once said, “You do not lead by hitting people over the head — that's assault, not leadership.” This is a perfect example of the difference between Ralph and Jack. Jack lacks the quality of empathy, which is what divides Ralph from Jack and leads Jack’s group to chaos while Ralph’s still holds onto some civilization.…
