CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Introduction
Grades in the realm of education are standardized measurement of varying levels of comprehension within a subject area. Grades are the measurement of student’s capabilities and to determine their strengths and weaknesses. This also serves as a tool which purpose is to determine the students’ strengths and weaknesses. It is important to use a grading system which helps teachers and school to determine the capabilities of students in each area. A system is a set of interacting or interdependent components forming an integrated whole or a set of element which are different from relationships of the set or its elements to other elements or sets. The new grading system which is the KPUT system divided into four components knowledge, process or skills, understanding and transfer. Knowledge is the component where you are questioned about the facts and definitions you’ve learned, which can be the basis of your stock knowledge about the basic definitions and facts about the lessons you’ve tackled. Process is where you will apply all your techniques and skills you’ve learned about the lessons in a given question or problem. Understanding is a component that will test your deep understanding about the lesson and it will also use your cleverness and knowledge to determine if you really understood the lesson. Transfer where students apply and relate their understandings and learning in real life situation. This new grading system has an advantages and disadvantages to the students but this system can easily determine the strengths and weaknesses of students because of the components in the system. This can be their basis in their studies. The study aims to identify the effects of the KPUT grading system to the students. And also to identify the advantages and disadvantages of the KPUT grading system.

Statement of the Problem
This study aims to answer and identify if the KPUT grading system affects students of the Grade 7 Students of Siena College of Taytay (School Year 2012-2013). The study will answer the following questions: 1. What components in the KPUT Grading System do students encounter difficulties? 2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the KPUT grading system? 3. What are the views of the students regarding the new grading system? 4. How do students gain benefits from the KPUT grading system? 5. Does KPUT Grading System improve the learning process of the students?

Theoretical Framework/Conceptual Framework
Advantages and Disadvantages of the KPUT Grading System * ADVANTAGES
* The students can determine their strengths and weaknesses in areas of English, Science, Math, C.L, Social Studies, Filipino, T.L.E, Reading, MAPEHS * The students would have the chance to improve and develop their skills in studying(listening, understanding) * The new grading system encourages students to study harder * The students will aim higher to get a good grade

AAAAA
* DISADVANTAGES
* There is a big factor to affect the student’s grade because of the components given (Knowledge, Process, Understanding, and Transfer) each component has a different percentage. If a student failed in one component and it has a big percentage of the grade then it is a factor to affect his grade. .

*

Significance of the Study
The results of the findings of the study are acclamatory to the following: To the Students
They will know their strengths and weaknesses in different areas that will help them to improve and develop their weaknesses because of the components of the grading system (Knowledge, Process, Understanding, Transfer) they can determine in what component they need to focus more. Because of these components they can avoid failure and lower grades because they are now aware about each components and it’s assigned percentage that will be a factor in calculating their grades....
