changed my life
Fall 2003 was the date; the Miami Orange Bowl was the place. The city of Miami had converged all at one time, in one place to watch a football game. It was against the Florida Gators and the city was abuzz with “GO CANES” signs and Miami jerseys. I was there too, experiencing something that I didn’t know, but something that would change my life forever.
My dad (who played for the Hurricanes from 1983-1987) and I walked into the colossal stadium. As we reached an opening to get to our seats I saw the field for the first time. It was beautiful, and it caught me off guard. Game time inched closer; and as the crowd was waiting impatiently a Florida Gator fan sat next to us and let’s just says he wasn’t the quiet type. As he reached his seat he gave us a look of “I think I’m better than you and I’m going to tell you I am.” Eventually, game time came and the crowd was pumped and ready to see their 3rd ranked Canes (picked to win by 2 touchdowns) stomp the Gators. The Canes got off to a strong start and were up 10-3; unfortunately that’s where the momentum stopped. The Gators scored 30 straight and the air that had been present early in the game was all but gone. My dad and I looked at each other disappointed. The Gator fan however was letting us have it. What happened over the next few moments was the beginning of my life changing experience. The Canes scored two touchdowns in under 4 minutes and we had a ball game: Florida 33 Miami 25. The Gator fan next to us was suddenly hushed. The crowd was in even more of a frenzy than before. I began to realize something, but just didn’t know what. The Canes defense held the Gators scoreless for the rest of the game and Miami pulled out an improbable 38-33 comeback victory. It was one of the greatest games in Miami Hurricane history; and for me it was just my first football game. It would not be my last. Before the game I didn’t know what sports where. Mom, what is football? I was into Transformers, Bionicles, Diggers,

It's early October on the grounds of the University of Kansas where barren trees; swaths of dormant, beige grass; and the pale, limestone buildings have created a monochromatic tableau that looks like a picture in an old, yellowed newspaper. Amongst the landscape of what could look like cathedrals lies a building that brings many students to their feet in anticipation of what will happen. Indeed, arriving for a game at Allen Fieldhouse can feel like preparing to rummage through the dusty archives of college basketball. But after a 2005 renovation, there's nothing musty about the newly developed structure. And with one of the best teams in the NCAA holding court inside, Allen Fieldhouse is all about the traditions that…

It was second quarter of the Washington Wilkes Tigers vs. Greene County Tigers football game in 2016. The empty city, with very little grocery stores and no entertainment. Not much of a place where I would want to reside, but they have been a rivalry for years. As we entered the stadium we heard the loud music as if we had come to get beat by the “fake tigers”. No tigers I have ever seen are blue and gold, so that was the go ahead to beat them and go home with a victory.…

From the moment we got off that bus at the McKinney Bulldogs field we didn’t know what to expect. Walking to the field’s one of the vehicles we passed had “Austin Here We Come”. That put some ice in my veins right away. Turning that corner to the view of the field was something I never will forget. San Rayburn was in the field dancing, playing, singing, joking, and thinking that they had already had us defeated because of what had happened in district. Yeah sure they were goofing off but they took it to an extreme what we had prepared ourselves for was nothing like that. Since they had never fully prepared themselves for us, and they thought they had us in the bag. We won our games against then 9-0, and 3-0. It was the first time in Blue Ridge High School history that girls’ softball team had ever advanced to the State tournament, it was incredible. We couldn’t believe that a team that had never been ranking made it this far; everyone had underestimated Blue Ridge softball but the team itself. I remember after the game as we got back on the bus after the victories over San Rayburn our coach proceeded to tell us he overheard one of the San Rayburn parents canceling their rooms in Austin and he implied “Book it back, where going to be needing them now”, which still plays as a mini clip in my head.…

Year after year, faithful collegiate football fans gather around the tailgate of their cars in parking lots around the nation and cook mediocre meals that taste delicious at the time because they share it with their fellow fans and season ticket holders. They all live different lives, but on Saturday, every weekend, they are the same, crazed fans that keep coming back to see their favorite team or Alma matter finish the day with a victory and so they can add one more to the win column of their record. Hopefully, they do not have to experience a loss and this year’s team goes undefeated, with a shot to play in the national championship and prove to the country, in one game, that they are the best college football team in America.…

The stadium is well known for its hosting duties of the SEC baseball tournament, showcasing the top twelve teams in the Southeastern Conference. However, most Friday nights, the stadium is occupied by Hoover football fans and players. Once the band arrives, we line up and march into the stadium to our cadence. Marching begins right outside of the buses, continues into the stadium, and ends once we have reached the section of the stadium, which has been designated for the band, prior to the fans arrival. The band plays a few stand chants while the Buccanettes dance along. Once the clock strikes 10 minutes until the game, the band marches behind the visiting stands to line up for pregame. Pregame includes the entire band marching onto the field to a cadence, turning towards the audience, standing at attention, then playing the national anthem and alma matter. After these two songs are played the band will march into a new formation on the field that will allow the players to run through while the band plays the fight song. Buccanettes stand in front of the band doing our stand dance to this tune, the cheerleaders held a huge sign for the players to run through and the colorguard would run across the field with large Buccaneer flags. The audience’s reaction made the all the previous hours of getting ready worthwhile. The student section was filled with shakers, lettermen, and hundreds of students. The rest of the stadium was filled with fans from the community. After pregame, the band would march back to the stands to begin more stand chants. The band played tunes such as ESPN, sunshine, the fight song, word up, and many others. At the beginning of the second quarter we would again march out of the stadium where stretching would take place to warm up for the halftime show. The first thing…

Its 6am Saturday morning, the parking lot is vacant. Staring down the road you see a line of cars as they file in one after another. It was a dreadful cold fall morning on November 7th and I was getting ready to board the bus for a state football game against the Becker Bulldogs. The police escorted us to Saint Cloud State under a lot of care. Even though I was a freshman and didn’t play much varsity, I was getting…

The October air was brisk, the sun had set, and the moon had risen. The lights and speakers could be seen and heard from miles away. This is Michigan high school football. Every year there is one game that has more fans and more energy, the homecoming game. Playing in this game is like a movie or video game. One cool, September afternoon, I stood in a hotel parking lot with 200 of my closest friends, in an unfamiliar state. Charter buses sat in the background with window paint announcing our arrival in a loud, “JAGUAR PRIDE!” The sun rose on the horizon, scattering blues and pinks across our faces. We were divided into two groups, the larger stood not twenty feet away doing breathing exercises and stretches, the smaller divided into its own groups, both of which battling the wind and the sun; the elements acting against us. We warmed up and we fought the elements, but there was always someone reminding us, “Savor this moment, this is what we’re here for.” Before we knew it, we were standing at the gates of Welcome Stadium, waiting, hearts pumping, minds reeling, some of us numb, for our chance to show Dayton what the Jaguar Pride was made of. We took the field, and everything that could have gone wrong, did. Our sound system crashed, we couldn’t hear the pit playing the opening, and we couldn’t see the drum majors giving us the count off, because we were stuffed into formation…

In the Fall of 2010, I watched my first televised football game from beginning to end. I sat down beside my older brother, Nick, and watched him as he analyzed every play of a Green Bay Packers game. He would scream at the tv when a bad play happened but would rejoice when a good one followed. I wanted to be just like him and know everything about football. I watched every game that season and annoyingly asked Nick every question that came to mind throughout the year. On February 6th, 2011 the Green Bay Packers won their 4th Superbowl title and I knew football like the back of my hand. After the game my brother said to me, “There’s no way you could ever not be a Packers fan now. You’re their good luck charm.” as I nodded, smiling ear to ear.…

“LET’S GO BOYS!!!! LET’S WIN THIS!!! BEAT THESE RAVENS!!!!!!” The crowd was screaming and chanting wildly as we began to run out of the locker rooms and onto the large football field. I lead them, raising my arms up and down to signal the crowd to get louder with their cheers. As I did this, I was also sprinting to the middle of the field through the large slit that was cut for my eyes. I turned back to the crowd in the stands, and the players ran around me, with smiles of their faces, to get to their positions and the bench. I started to jump and raise my arms, “ FROGGY!!! FROGGY!!! FROGGY!!!” They all chanted my name in union, some of them even had signs and horns! A large smile crept onto my face behind my large mascot mask, and I couldn’t…

The stadium was filled to full capacity with women, men, and children. I could not spot an empty seat in the place. Many spectators were dressed in colors of black, blue, and gold. However, the overall majority of the crowd was dressed in black and red. After the singing of the National Anthem, the football teams flooded the field in grandiose fashion. The crowd became ecstatic. The fans were cheering so loud that neither my girlfriend nor I could hear each other. The first quarter of the game seemed rather dull and mediocre, however by the second quarter, things had become incredibly intense. At the commencement of the second quarter, I could see athletes perform almost superhuman feats such as running, jumping, and throwing. The athletes appeared to be demigods with helmets and modern day gladiators. One player got hit so hard that he was carted off the field. Nonetheless, the game continued without a skipping a beat. During the second quarter, fans continued to cheer and chant for their teams. As the masses roared, the players responded by playing more aggressively. As the game went on, each team proved to be a force to be reckoned with. Each time one team scored, the other team replied with a score of their own. The back and forth scoring kept the fans on edge and tense. By the end of the second quarter, the game had become tied with only the second half…
