Why is it that so many college presidents are in favor of lowering the drinking age: is alcohol really that bad? College officials and presidents are the closest people to the youth of the world when they enter the college world. They would know better than the people in congress and the Supreme Court sitting behind there desks what the students at their universities are capable of.   Prohibition on alcohol has never worked and why would this be any different.   The United States has tried a prohibition act twice to control irresponsible drinking. The first took place in the 1920’s; this was a national prohibition. The prohibition of the 1920’s enforced the eighteenth amendment and put a halt on America’s most popular form of socializing. Alcohol became a banned beverage.   The second trial for prohibition took place in the 1850’s; this prohibition was being enforced by the state laws. This is the prohibition we know today. It states the no one under the age of twenty one shall purchase alcohol.   The main reason for all of the drinking problems is due to the fact of irresponsible drinking. When people are not taught how to drink responsibly it often leads to abusive drinking. Abusive drinking is when people drink in what is called underground drinking. This is done without adult supervision and often times binge drinking is involved.   If it is such a bad thing then why is it that multiple prestige college presidents have come forward and have pushed to lower the drinking age to eighteen; they believe that having the drinking age at twenty-one encourages binge drinking among students.   In conclusion I have decided that it will take a lot to get the law changed but I believe that this relates to a quote that I have heard before, if it walks like a duck talks like a duck and looks like a duck then it must be a duck.
