Comp 1: Saturday Class
January 11, 2014 What Is This Name? SOKOL

Four years ago, I met someone who I now consider a dear friend, his name is Vojmir Benak. He prefers to be called Buddy. I have also become very good friends with his family. Every member of his family are also members of a physical education organization, called SOKOL. My friend happens to be the president, and manager of Sokol Hall. I have been employed there for almost a year. The last four years I have had the opportunity to learn a lot about Sokol. It is a name I remember hearing for the first time when I was in grade school. It was associated with gymnastics. For a long time I had a real desire to sign up for classes. My interest came from a feeling I had while watching competitions on television. I wanted to learn how to do the flips, and jumps on those beams and bars. Now as an adult, my thoughts and views on what Sokol means have changed. My interests are different. Now I know of the hall to be used for events, such as Fight Club, wild game feeds, and even music concerts. Other things I know Sokol Hall for are wedding receptions and birthday parties. Times in peoples’ lives where memories are made, and intimate moments are shared. Up until I met my friend, and then later began working at the hall, I have never wondered what the name Sokol meant. I knew what Sokol meant for me growing up as a child, and even now as an adult, and a resident of Omaha, but not for them. These people come from a whole different world. They have a whole different background and cultural. The stuff I learned about in history class. I never really had an interest in things that happened before my time. I recently learned that the hall board has voted to sell the hall. I decided to do my profile essay on Sokol for a variety of reasons. My plan was to get information on the history, and also learn about the culture of Czechoslovakia. Both things, very much

Heda Margolius Kovaly’s Under A Cruel Star is a captivating memoir that provides historical accounts during the time period when Czechoslovakia was under Nazi control and faced with Stalinism. Kovaly gives her personal first hand accounts on experiences in concentration camps, post-war struggles, and the life that she lived while under Communism. Contrasting with Under A Cruel Star, John Merriman’s A History of Modern Europe uses clear and concise mundane facts to provide the accounts of history during this era. Presenting history in a memoir makes the read effortless and alluring but it also takes away some of the factual significance that the textbook offers. History presented in this form differs from accounts during this time era written…

Soonerthon is a year-long fundraising event ending with a twelve-hour dance marathon in the spring. All the proceeds raised benefits The Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City through funding medical research and family support programs. The programming committee is in charge of planning every minute of the twelve-hour event dance marathon. Within the committee, my personal responsibility was to design and organize a children’s carnival at the main event for the “miracle kids” from the hospital. The joy that radiated from the children that passed through the carnival was contagious, not only to myself but also to the other 2,000 OU students that attended the Soonerthon event as well.…

A few years ago, I was just a freshman, who was intrigued by every aspect of my school. I was surprised to see that there is a hang out place called Senior hills, and that’s where most of the seniors hang out. There was also a specific room where most musically gifted kids hang out called the Band room. And lastly there is A quad, where kids love the color black, and could spend all day reading manga. As I wonder where I belong to in this huge melting pot, I met a group of older girls in my geometry class, Jordyn, Hannah, and Ally. Jordyn insisted that I should hang out with them, since I’m new and need guidance. They showed me to my classes, and taught me about spirit weeks and rally days. They said we should use spirit days to show school unity and look cuter than usual. One day, during lunch, when we were all dressed up as hippies in our trendy bohemian clothes chit chatting about what to wear for tomorrow spirit…

When Mr. Davis and Miss Davis are preparing to leave, Althrope becomes paranoid and filled with anxiety that something horrible will happen to them if they leave, so he tries, but ultimately fails, to convince them to wait until the morning to leave.…

This past Summer, as part of my social justice service hour requirement, I volunteered as a big buddy at the Miracle League of Green Bay.The Miracle League is a program that allows children and teens with a disability to play baseball. A big buddy helps one of the players run the bases and hit the ball. Every week you play a different team but have the same buddy. As a big buddy it is also your job to communicate with the player and get to know more about them. My favorite part of this experience was getting to know my player. My player (name), was an eleven year old boy. When I first met him I thought it was going to be hard to relate or talk to him however, as the season went on I realized I was totally wrong. I asked him about what interested…

It was my sophomore year, and I auditioned for the play Our Town. Our Town is a play I will never forget. I do not know how, and I do not know why, but somehow God used this play to reveal Himself once more to me. He gave to me a cast that treated me as family and a plot that told of greater moments than this life. Our Town depicted what most consider to be unimportant, everyday activities and revealed their intrinsic value with each line and stage direction. In rehearsal we discussed multiple times the significance of this play and how it applies to our lives. By the time performances rounded the corner, my heart was near to bursting. A feeling of belonging and the need to appreciate every moment overwhelmed me. Most importantly, I felt a tug at the back of my mind, a quote from the Stage Manager, “We all know something is…

My unique educational environment of a school has allowed me the opportunity to form close relationships with teachers and students alike, enabling me to interact with people of various backgrounds and ages. These experiences prepared me for my encounters beyond the realm of the classroom. Within this environment, I planned my class' junior and senior trips. These experiences provided me with an opportunity to represent my classmates while fostering communication between the faculty and students. Currently, I participate in a class called . Twice a week, and I get together to read, review his homework, talk about current events, and share our life experiences. While this seemed intimidating at first, I learned that he depended on me to help with his work. No longer was I just ‘helping out', but I had a responsibility to to assist with his learning and be a positive role model in his life. With these recent school experiences, I have learned how communication and compassion can instill responsibility and be a person's most valuable allies.…

She was our ESL English teacher and immediately noticed that I was a new student and greeted me in nice way. She told me to stand up and introduce myself, which I did. After the lesson, we all went out for break. It was so nice for me because I interacted with so many students from different cultures. I was really glad to know many people and have new friends. For the first few weeks, everyone seemed to have a good English accent, which I didn’t have, but later I was on my way to understanding the new English accent. Most of the students I became friends with helped me, too. After a few weeks, one of my classmates saw me playing soccer; he started telling me about the high school soccer team, and he also told me I could be a good player for the team. I was so happy to hear that my school had a soccer team. I never played for a school team, but I played soccer all my life. Back in Kenya when I was nine years old, a recruiter from France wanted to take me to France to play soccer, but my parents didn’t let me go with him because they didn’t want me to play soccer. Instead, they wanted me to study Islamic education. When summer came, it was so long for me because I was waiting for the tryouts to begin. When finally the tryout started, I was ready to…

While in Best Buddies, I was able to make some great friends with some of West’s and Hope Wall’s mentally and/or physically handicapped students. One of the most important things in this club for the Peer Buddies was commitment and attendance to the events because so many students would go to one or two things and never show up to anything the rest of the year which made it difficult to host organized events not knowing if the Peer Buddy to Buddy ratio was big enough. The Buddies also often looked forward to seeing their Peer Buddies, so this is why it was even more important for me to attend and help at all the events I possibly could because the club relied on me as one of a small group of students who consistently attended and helped at these…
