Change is one of the inevitabilities of life; it pervades all aspects of our lives and is a constant in the natural world. Change must involve a shift in states, whether those states are physical, intellectual, social and/or emotional.   The three main aspects of change that influence the idea and consequences of change are: that there is either a positive or negative effect of change, how characters react and adapt to change, and how change can be unexpected.
With all aspects of change, there is either a positive or negative effect. These effects could be negative to an individual, but may in fact be positive to society as a whole. In Enders Game by Orson Scott Card, Ender is faced with many challenges and complications which he believes to have a negative effect on him.   The consequences of these challenges then relate in a positive change for the world as a whole. In chapter fourteen, Mazer Rackham speaks to ender saying that, "You will learn to defeat the enemy", even though Ender does not want to hurt others. The consequences of this battle result in the ‘buggers’ planet being destroyed, and this has a positive effect on the world, but a personally negative effect on Ender. Top Gun directed by Tony Scott has many consequences of change resulting in positive and negative effects. These effects are primarily focused around the protagonist, Maverick. Maverick’s co-pilot Goose dies because of an unprecedented event that Maverick caused but could not control. This has a greatly negative effect on Maverick, and he has a dramatic emotional change throughout the second half of the movie. When Hawaii was invaded by the Japanese, there was a massive negative effect on the world. This resulted in many lives being lost. The Japanese saw this initial advancement as a positive change, but later in the movie, the effects that it has on them as a society results in a negative change.
