Challenges of being a student
Zoom InZoom Out Page 1 of 2
Good afternoon to members of the floor.
Before I start with my speech, allow me to ask a very simple question. Have you guys ever complaint about your school, your teachers, or being a student? I think mostly 99.99% of you guys may say yes. We actually complain when we face challenges or difficulties. And today, I am going to put forward three points of challenges I faced of being a student. Firstly, which I think it is also the most important, pressure of sitting examinations. Frankly speaking, the preparation is somehow a tough one if someone really wants to pass with flying colors. We have to make sure that we always pay full attention in the class. I feel upset if I do not score well in any tests or exams. Also, I think the pressure actually comes from our education system. The Asian-style of learning is very rigid. We sit below the stage and are suppose to listen and absorb every single word the teachers have said. No space is allowed for us to think and to be creative. We memorize essays to score better. We study because of exams, because of scholarships, or even because to get a better job in the future. However, at most of the time, western countries students learn with interest. They do a lot of outing when learning. They learn with their five senses. It makes them to think, to digest and to be more creative. And I really admire the way they learn. Let’s just imagine how nice it would be if there are no exams! Next, I think peer pressure is also making me mad sometimes. I found that teenagers nowadays like to compare. We compare about our results, activities involved, luxury goods, or even friendship sometimes. I think school is somewhere we suppose to gain knowledge and to learn communicate with others. Friends indeed are people to whom we can always complain and to share the happiness with. However, it will not be perfect in that way. Problems always occur whenever something is linked to people. For an example, we are

The excruciating examination process in which thousands of pressured students who are not fully ready to take an exam, must prove what they have ‘learned’ to aggressive and rapacious examiners, only a minority being selected in the vast marine of shinning students who have just been unchained of the shackles of school work and deadlines? And the rest...? They are left to dry out in the harsh world, to be taunted for doing miserable on that one day, not being given another try. Exams deteriorate us and oppress our very lives making our everyday routine revising and reiterating for an exam that can determine our whole life. The 2 sided pages trap us into our failure, whilst the time ticks at its loudest, making us write nothing but a single letter on a line which finally concludes our end result. Of course if you are to do well, you are fine, but with the ever-changing ruthless mark scheme it’s very difficult to do just well. The pressure put on the fragile mind only gives the tormenter one choice under the stress leading to the examination. To give up! Even the polite and civilised students fall and loose complete confidence in them self’s, feeling like they ruined there only last chance to shine. NO! It’s exhausting having to prepare for an examination when the end result is marked so harshly, it puts the only courage you have down. Masses of tress being removed, the same tress giving us the air we breathe. Papers and papers and pages and pages... all for a single letter on a line, is it truly worth it? Examinations should be banned from the education procedures to avoid any harm it does to the livelihood of a child’s mind.…

Students apply unnecessary pressure on them by comparing themselves to their peers. Zinsser mentions that a student he calls Linda “who came in and said she was under terrible pressure because her roommate, Barbra was much brighter and studied all the time.” This student is a perfect example of making an unnecessary comparison which stresses her out. This pressure leads to students over work them-selves. “A professor will assign five-page papers”. “Several students will start writing ten-page papers to impress him.”(par.27). Instead of just following the guidelines of an assignment they are trying to shoot above and beyond the requirements. I can really relate to this pressure because I do add a lot of stress on myself. I immediately assume everyone is doing better than me which makes me work harder, but at the same time it causes me to over work myself. I have to make sure all my kids need are done, and then I stay up late to make sure all my school work is done. This pressure affects me negatively because I add a lot of stress on myself that does not need to be added. Instead of focusing on my growth academically. I am always worried about who is doing better than me in…

Self-regulated learning can be defined as “The process in which [a] student is cognitively, motivationally, and behaviorally active in his or her learning.” (Zimmerman and Martinez-Pons). While this concept is relatively new, many students have embraced it over the last few decades resulting in their success. I am one of those many students that embrace this concept; some aspects stronger than the others. Planning and organizing not only play a major role in my life as a student, but in my life in general. Though I often lack the confidence to ask questions that provide a more thorough understanding of what I am trying to learn, the one aspect of my learning I can control is my learning environment.…
