The MPA program is extremely appealing to me, as I would like the ability to further my education and continue to gain the knowledge to be an effective leader and eventually become an Executive in the non-profit world.
I work for FEGS-WeCARE, which is a non-profit organization that provides services to Public Assistance Recipients who are mandated to participate and comply with the program in order for their benefits to continue. WeCARE is an HRA city funded performance based program.
Recently I have been promoted to a Coordinator position-mid level manager. One of my professional goals as a Coordinator is to assist front line managers with organizing a Unit that receives a high number of client referrals. I work and supervise front line managers in developing and implementing proper procedures so that the Unit is performing optimally and efficiently.
Prior to my promotion, this Unit has been struggling with the ability to ensure that milestones are being met. I encountered a few obstacles in my transition of this new role. Firstly, I had to adjust to working in a different borough and having to deal with learning how my particular Unit works. Secondly, although I am knowledgeable in the field of case management; I have little knowledge about the medical information that is so pertinent in my Unit. Additionally, I felt that I lacked the expertise of demonstrating to my staff that I have the ability to assist them and guide them in the right direction. I was very eager to lead my staff towards other techniques and solutions, outside of their comfort zone. My goal is to enable them learn from me as I am trying to learn from them.
The first and most difficult challenge in my Unit is motivating my staff to take the initiative and provide quality service to their clients. Morale is low due to high client caseloads and busy schedules. My case managers lacked the motivation to manage their caseloads and time effectively. .
