Challenged Widely Shared Values

The Internet is now a big part of everyone’s lives in the 21st century. People rely on it every day now since it is mostly required in jobs and schools around the world. We use it for communication, research, learning, and entertainment. The Internet has become a need for living for many people, causing them to be in front of a screen for long hours at a time, hurting them physically, socially and mentally, becoming less far superior and more reliant on it.

A person may be in front on the computer for recreational or working purposes for long periods of time, but no matter what reason, it will hurt them physically. Studies have shown that being in front of the monitor hurts the eyes since they are constantly focusing on the screen, creating stress. Before, the eyes were constantly on alert, looking for food or danger, but now computer screens have caused us to focus our eyes on a fixed point. Since people are exposed to the computer for long periods of time, many need to wear glasses. Back problems may also occur due to the long hours of just sitting. “The spine wasn't designed for sitting in front of a computer or behind the wheel of a car for long periods.” Bad postures in front of the screen all contribute to the pain, causing “increased fatigue to the muscles and ligaments supporting the lower back and can eventually lead to tissue injury and spinal joint dysfunction” this all leads to a less active lifestyle, hurting the body overall. These people are doing less exercise and eating more unhealthy foods, becoming obese. Since people are sitting for most of the time, our body is not breaking down the foods that we eat. “…animal studies have shown that prolonged sitting slows down the action of an enzyme (lipoprotein lipase) that breaks down fats in the blood, such as cholesterol and triglycerides.” Everyone wants good health, but through the everyday needs like the computer, is preventing them from achieving it.
