This paper contains information pertaining to the General Electric CF34 turbofan engine, which is the best-selling engine in regional aviation history. The information provided consists of the history and development of the CF34 and how it was originally developed for use in the United States Military as the TF34. The unique characteristics that set it apart from other turbofans are addressed, and a discussion takes place on why its application on regional jets is so prevalent. Aircraft readiness, on-time departures, reliability and cost-effective operation are all important measures of a successful regional aircraft engine, and all are inherent in the CF34 design.

The General Electric CF34 sparked the introduced of the regional jet. Which was one of the most important events in commercial aviation. The General Electric CF34 is just a civilian turbofan. This Turbofan that was the most efficient for regional jets is used in many jet airliners including the CRJ and E- jets (General Electric 2012). This design for the CF34 is best made for air carriers carrying 50-100 people on board which is perfect for regional use. To this day the CF34 General Electric turbofan entered service in 1992 and is still the most reliable turbofan with 99.95 dispatch reliability and over 80 million flight hours with 65 million cycles completed since the CF34-3A1 engine (General Electric 2012). The CF34 was originally developed through the General Electric TF34 military engine. The TF34 military engine powered the Lockheed S-3A and the Fairchild Republic A-10. The TF34 engine was mounted on the A-10 thunderbolt for its low altitude/airspeed maneuverability is attributed to the TF34 high-bypass axial flow turbofan engine. The A-10 is equipped with two rear-mounted TF34 engines providing the high power, high efficiency, and high thrust-to-weight ratio. From the engines first debut in 1983, the engine has made its mark in the regional jet world. The CF34-3 entered service in 1992 on the Bombardier CRJ100 and CRJ200. For this engine the only way for it to go was up. The next upgrade to this engine was the CF34-8, which was used by Bombardier again to power its CRJ700 and CRJ900 for its 170-175 passenger regional jets. In 2005 General Electric came out with its CF34-10 this engine was quickly picked up by Embraer for its 190-195 passenger Regional Jets. In early 2007 it was known that over 1500 aircraft were flying with the CF34 engines worldwide. Lastly the CF34-10 was picked by the AVIC 1 Commercial Aircraft Company of China to power its ARJ21 sometime in 2009 (Special Report, 2007). Today the General Electric CF-34 engine is known as the best selling engine in aviation history with over 5000 engines in service with over 170 carriers (General Electric 2012).
