TRAFODWCH YMATEB Y BEIRDD I RHYFELA AR DARLUN A GAWN O RYFEL YN EU GERDDI. CYFEIRIWCH AT GERDDI O LEIA DAU O’R BEIRDD GAN DRAFOD EU CYNWYS A’U HARDDULL.

Yn y traethawd yma mi fyddaf yn trafod cerddi Waldo Williams, Gerallt Lloyd Owen, Ceri Wyn Jones ac Iwan Llwyd. Gobeithiaf cymharu holl gerddi’r beirdd yn ymwneud a rhyfel a thrafod eu cynnwys a’u harddull a sut mae’r beirdd yn teimlo ynglyn a rhyfel.
Mae’r gerdd ‘Y sgerbwd milwr’ gan Gerallt Lloyd Owen yn son am golledion rhyfel ac am y tro gwelodd lun o milwr a daliodd ei lygaid. Mae’n ein hatgoffa ni mae unigolun yw pob milwr “pwy oedd y corf hwn?” am fod pobol o tueddu i gyfri’r colledion fesul degau nid fesul un. “Un yn y rheng” yw’r milwr mae’n trafod ac nid oes annibyniaeth ganddo am fod gymaint o bobol yno. Mae’r bard yn ceisio rhoi hunaniaeth i’r milwr yma wrth son am “ei ddwylo” ac ei fam a’r “galon fu’n curo” oherwydd pryder y fam. Wrth wneud hyn mae’n dangos bod teulu gyda’r milwr a teimlo tosturi dros y fam wrth i’r bardd gyfeirio at y “baban mewn croth” sef y milwr pan oedd yn blentyn. Mae’n codi’r pwynt bod y milwr yma yn ddiniwed “eiddilwch ei ddwylo” ond yn gwrthgyferbynu y fyddai’n rhaid iddo ladd er mwyn achub bywyd ei hun “bu’r dwylo hyn yn barod i ladd. “. Mae’r gerdd yma yn dywyll ac yn dangos y rhyfel fel peth barbaraidd a chreulon. Mae marwolaeth y milwr yn un unig “unigrwydd ei waed” heb urddas, “rhwygo’i berfedd” a cwestyna’r bardd “pa law estron “ allai fod mor greulon a lladd gyda’i “gledd gwlyb”? Cwestiyna’r bardd hefyd faint sy’n rhaid colli er mwyn cael heddwch oherwydd nid yw’n bosib troi nol o angau “gwaed a weldiwyd wrth tragwyddoldeb”. Mae’r bard yn ofni bod rhyfel arall i ddod ac mae’r sgerbwd yn symboli’r marwolaeth (unneccecary)) fel rhyw aberth o bosib yn enw cyfiawnder, rhyw egin chwyldro.
Tra bod Ysgerbwd milwr yn cyfleu marwolaeth fel peth ofnadwy o drist mae’r gerdd ‘geneth ifanc gan Waldo Williams sydd hefyd yn son am sgerbwd yn ceisio cael agwedd bositif

Anghytunaf gyda’r gosodiad hwn- credaf fod ffactorau eraill pwysicach a wnaeth effeithio fwy ar hyn na’r Babaeth. Er hynny, rhaid cofio fod gan y Babaeth mwy o rym yn y cyfnod hwnnw na sydd yn bodoli heddiw. By using such strong visual imagery, Owen burns the scenes of horrible warfare into our brains. The writer pulls us along as we follow the ‘knock-kneed, coughing’ (line 2) soldiers as they battle to stay alive with chaos all around them. He experiences this terrible first hand as he and the other troops marched ‘bent-double, like old beggars under sacks’ (1). We get this vivid sense of fear and pain as ‘if [we] could hear, at every jolt, the blood / come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs’. This is an experience most soldiers face and one we should be aware of and removing this powerful work of poetry from The Bedford Introduction to Literature would be taking a step in the wrong direction.…

Wilfred Owen was not only a soldier exposed to the horrific realities of war, he was also a talented poet who addresses important themes within his poetry such as the false glorification of war. His vivid and visceral descriptions of the horrors of war also strongly addressed the futility of war that people should not have to endure in any lifetime. Russell Williams

With regards to psychology there are many different theories and perspectives of the human mind however, I will be focusing on Sigmund Freud’s theory of human behavior. Freud believed that “human behaviour is driven by desires and the suppression of the same desires”. Concerning the case of Col. Russell Williams, he was a paraphilic; he stole lingerie and then took photographs of the women he sexually assaulted. According to Freud’s theory of human behavior, Williams did not possess the ability to control his desires. He started off as a “voyeur”, but somehow transformed into a perverted sex offender with a dark fixation for violence. Sigmund Freud compared the mind to an iceberg. Everything we are aware of is just the tip, while our unconscious mind is the majority of the iceberg which remains under the surface. According to Freud the unconscious mind keeps all impulses and “primitive wishes” under control. Colonel Russell Williams started by spying on females, he then began breaking into their homes, stealing pieces of underwear and masturbating on their beds. It is clear to see that Williams’ inner desires were not even remotely normal. “It 's very unusual for a guy who 's got his act together like that ... to all of a sudden start committing crimes at a late age,” said Professor Quinsey of Psychology at Queens University.…

Owen uses various techniques and devices to evoke the sense of World War One. Words such as ‘beggars’, ‘children’ and ‘boys’ refers to the soldiers. In the first verse, ‘Bent double, like old beggars under sack, knocked-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge’, ‘like’ indicates that it’s the use of simile and ‘old beggars’ is hyperbole of soldiers’ fatigue. ‘Knocked-knee’ is the use of alliteration. ‘His hanging face, like a devil’s sick of sin;’ is a visible image of the war. He depicts the pain of the death to devil by using simile. Owen uses capital letters and exclamation marks in the ninth verse, ‘Gas! Gas! Quick, boys!’. This increases the emergency and urgent of the moment. ‘As under a green sea, I saw him drowning’ is the comparison of simile and metaphor in one verse. The word ‘flung’…

Owen started writing poems long before the war, and he stated that he started at the age of ten. His friend, Siegfried Sassoon had a large effect on his poetry, especially in ‘Dulce et Decorum est’ and ‘Anthem for Doomed Youth’. These show direct results of Sassoon’s influence. A poem by Pat Barker was written about their relationship.…
