The central argument in Judy Brady’s essay, “I WANT A WIFE” is; after the persona (husband) seeing the importance of a wife in her society, she tries to give reasons for wanting a wife. By so doing she gives her definitions of who a wife is and who a husband is by putting herself in a husband’s shoes with words which seem very controversial .Her argument is an explicit argument that seeks to support controversial claims with reasons and evidence .This aims at drawing the attention of the audience and the readers to what actually takes place in this society.

Again she brings to bear several atrocious acts against women ,all in the name of wifely duties .An example from Judy Brady’s essay is; “If by chance ,I find another person more suitable as a wife than the wife I already have ,I want the liberty to replace my present wife with another ”.This statement is shocking and very cruel ,after this ideal wife has gone through the pain to please her husband by complying with all the criteria of who a wife should be .This includes making huge sacrifices for her family .She wakes up one day only to be struck with the reality that she is no more needed .Whereas one who is more suitable than her is to take her place.

Moreover, in the essay the persona(husband)usually makes use of the pronoun ‘I’ as in ‘I want’ that runs through the entire essay not giving thought to what the wife wants .At this point the ethos of the persona is clear that the words of the persona(husband) has unmade her, showing how selfish she is .Thinking only about herself .An example from the essay is when the persona(husband) makes use of the statement; ‘I want a wife to take care …’, ‘to make sure …’ , “to keep track …”, “pick up after …” and so forth. If the title had not been “I want a wife” one would have thought the persona (husband) wanted a maid or a personal assistant .Even these two categories of people would have demanded some respect and not to be treated like non-entities...
