Purpose: To investigate the effect of temperature and germination or non-germination on cell respiration by using a respirometer. Hypothesis: If the peas are germinating then they will use more oxygen and the vials will show a higher rate of reaction in the room temperature bath. Procedure: We used all the materials and followed the procedures outlined in the packet. Analysis:

All the vials had a cotton ball with one milliliter of KOH absorbed in it and then a non-absorbent cotton ball on top then the same volume of germinating peas, non-germinating peas and beads, or just beads. All vials then had a stopper placed in the opening and respirometer put through the stopper into the vial. All vials were sealed. One vial of each was placed in a room temperature bath and the other three were placed in an ice bath. In the data table and graph, it is shown that geminating peas went through respiration faster than the non-germinating peas in both the ice bath and the room temperature bath, and that the rate of reaction was higher in the room temperature bath than in the ice bath. The corrective difference, which is what is graphed, is the difference in the readings of the peas subtracted from the difference in the readings of the beads. There is a corrective difference shown because the difference in reading of the beads should have been zero, because beads are not living and do not go through cellular respiration, so something must have happened to the entire bath to make the change in the vials containing beads. In the data table and in the graph you can see there was a difference in reaction for the vials in the room temperature bath and in the germinating peas. There was a higher rate of reaction in the vials in the room temperature bath because molecules move slower when cold so respiration moves slower in the ice bath while in the room temperature bath molecules are moving faster.
