There has been a public out cry on the use of cellphones on some college campuses, and it has prompted some college administrators to put a ban on cellphone use at their institutions. Some students say they can't live without their phones. Most people will even go to the extent of using them in the middle of a class session, which has brought debate among some college administrators to enact a ban on the use of cellphones in the campus premises. Cellphones should not be banned from the college campus because students need them for communication, cellphones can be used as personal computers, and they can also be used for safety.
First and most important, just like everybody else, college students need to communicate with the outside world too. Many students will use the cellphone to communicate with family and friends. A good example is with international students. They are far away from their loved ones and the only easy way they can be in touch is by phone. Another example is of students that run their own businesses; they too will want to be reached by their clients by phone, so banning cellphones in college campuses will have a negative effect on how students communicate with their loved ones and business partners.
As long as students use cellphones for educational purposes, then they shouldn't be banned in schools. Today, cellphones come with applications like that of a computer. They have a calculator and some, Internet. With such helpful applications, students can be able to use their cellphones to do some research while in class. For example, if a student does not have a computer to access the school website, or receive course updates from the lecturer, he/she can use a cellphone to do his class work, so banning them from the college campus will not help students who use their cellphones as personal computers.
