Michelle Lopez 02/24/13 English 79 In-class essay #1 Cell-phones: Distractions In today's society, it's unusual that we see people without a cell phone nowadays. We even see kids who have phones. Although they do come in handy, there are many disadvantages of have a cell phone that can affect our own daily life or the people around us as well. Everyone seems to talk about the advantages of having a cell phone, and we often forget about the disadvantages. The disadvantages of having a cell phone that I see is a everyday thing are, social reasons, they're costly, and most importantly texting and driving. Firstly, I feel that having cell-phones can cause a distraction when you're out and about with friends or family, but instead of socializing and being with who you're suppose to be with at the time you're on your phone. For example, I personally have that problem myself. This one time as my friend Ellise and I were out having lunch and having girl time, I would constantly be on my phone, or I would feel like I constantly have to check it to see if anyone has texted or called me. That could be a problem because who really wants to be out with someone who is always on there phone, and not paying attention to them? Nobody. Secondly, cell-phones are not cheap. Especially all the Iphones, Android phones and such, they can cost up to like four hundred dollars to purchase the phone, not to mention the plan we choose to have that can cost up to sixty dollars depending on what company we are buying the phone from. For example, I recently got the LG Motion 4G from Metro. The phone itself cost about $130 dollars, and plus the plan that I choose which is fifty dollars a month. If I think about it, I don't really need a smart phone, I just wanted it. All that money I invested in getting that phone could have went to something I needed . Most importantly, I often see a great quantity of people texting or talking on the phone while they're driving. Not only can their phones cause them danger, but everyone around them too. For example, there has been a sufficent amount of cell phone related accidents because of being on their phone. I have had a friend once who got into a minor car accident because the person rear ended my friend while she was stopped at red light. At the time my friend was six months pregnant, so God knows what was running through her head at the time. In conclusion, cell-phones have their advantages and disadvantages, but sometimes the disadvantages out-weigh the advantages. In my case, the disadvantages out-weigh the advantages, but unfortunately that's not something that can be fixed.

Not a minute goes by where cell phones aren’t being used somewhere at some time. The average American looks at their phone 150 times per day. That works out to once every 6.5 minutes of every hour that the average person is awake. (Glaser) As high as those numbers are, the usage of cell phones will only continue to increase as time goes on. Cell phones have their advantages but the amount of time people spend on their cellphones is ruining face to face communication, jeopardizing jobs in the future, and putting people’s lives at a higher risk.…

In “Extra large, Please,” Alice M. Davies focuses on the increase of obesity with children, which schools are provoking. There are many various social problems in kids of America today ranging from poverty to drug abuse. One alarming factor that is rapidly exploding is childhood obesity. Alice Davies’ article, “‘Extra Large,’ Please,” which describe the alarming social problem of childhood obesity connected to the fast food industry in America today. Davies stated: “the number of American kids who are dangerously overweight has tripled. More than 16 percent of our children qualify as ‘obese’” (Davies). Although childhood obesity is a growing problem stemming from a terrible diet and lack of exercise, we can take action now to avoid further detriment towards their future health. The first cause of childhood obesity is the lack of inactivity. Many schools are not required to have any physical education. Unfortunately, Davies’ states: “Many of those schools are so short of money they’ve scrapped physical-fitness classes” and “too few communities have athletic programs in place.” It is terrible that schools have a hand in this growing epidemic. Also, Spurlock’s Supersize Me documentary shows that “schools are cutting out recess to study for testing and only one state requires physical-fitness classes.” It is terrible that most of these children taking exams are obese. In addition, they live in a dangerous neighborhood where they can’t go out and play because drug activity and violent crime may make playing outside dangerous. Communities should take part in making the neighborhood a safe haven for kids to play outside. The second cause of childhood obesity is poor eating habits. Children will rather eat candy instead of focusing on the products that are good for the body. Parents play a major role when it comes to allowing or giving their child food that will damage the body more less providing nutrients. Children need to leave the junk food behind…
